===================================================================================== I know it's pretty short notice, but I'd like for as many PogoTribians as possible to be involved with our video for the VlogBrothers' Project For Awesome 2010. For those of you unfamiliar with what the Project For Awesome is, it's simply taking a charity of choice and promoting it in video form on YouTube during a specified timeframe. The charity we have chosen is called Child's Play. Never heard of it? Here's part of the "About" page they set up over at childsplaycharity.org: Since 2003, we’ve set up and organized Child’s Play, a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in our network of over 60 hospitals worldwide. In five short years, you as a community have answered the call and come together to raise millions of dollars.
That was awesome. You guys have proven over and over again that you are an overwhelming force, and you really came through and made a real difference to the millions of kids that children’s hospitals care for each year. So we’re doing it again this year, only this time we’ve expanded Child’s Play to more hospitals around US and the globe so you can send toys to a hospital a little closer to home.
Child’s Play works the same as last year. With the help of hospital staff, we’ve set up gift wish lists full of video games, toys, and movies. You can go to each hospital’s list and buy a toy, and that toy will be sent to the hospital. Some of these kids are in pretty bad shape. Imagine being stuck alone in a hospital over the holidays, getting something from a fellow gamer would really raise their spirits. Some of the stuff the hospital will give away for kids to keep, while other gifts (like consoles) will be kept by the hospital for patients to use throughout the year.
We are arguably the largest community of gamers on the internet. The important word there being community. We are not a faceless corporation and you are not just a number tracked by a database and then relayed to hungry advertisers. You guys have proven yourselves to be a powerful force when stirred into action. Here is your opportunity to use that power to do some real good. So, what do we need to do now? Before December 17, we need to do a bit of research, write up a script, film clips, edit them together and post them to thepogotribe YouTube account. It's going to be tough. I've set up a page on the Wiki to edit a script for us to record. Let's have it finalized by Tuesday at 8:00pm EST so that all who are filming can send in their footage using SendSpace to pogotribestaff@gmail.com by Wednesday at 8pm EST.

I know they accept money, but anyone know whether they accept old unused game consoles?

I'd recommend using Dropbox paired with Airdropper for the video sending.

I actually am in a central location of 3 hosptials, B'ham AL, Vanderbilt TN and Memphis... the Le Bonheur Children's Hosptial. Now I can't promise anything because the silly season is crazy as hell, but I'll try to hit these places up and catch some footage.... if I can find a camera
don't count on it by any means... but just letting you know I'll try

I'd recommend using Dropbox paired with Airdropper for the video sending. Please provide me with links, instructions and why that may work better. I'll probably use it. =)

So, research is like IRL research, or just some more information besides what you quoted there ?

OK, signed-up. Although I'm not really sure I can do any writing I suppuse I can at least try and see if I am any help EDIT:Research: OK, here's a "What? Who? Why? Where? How? When? " sort of thing, compressed in spoilers, hopefully, for your commodity ;D: What?: I suppose that's clear by now, but I guess it doesn't hurt to talk some more about that . Child's play! Basically it is a non-profit organization and community dedicated to help sick kids get through really hard times by giving them joy and entertainment (with toys, books movies and games). Who?: Child's Play was started by the folks at Penny Arcade (from the gaming Webcomic), along with their community, Amazon and Seattle's children's hospital, but it has now extended over North America and some parts of the globe. Using the powers of the internet everyone can help, even if you can't volunteer to phisically be there. Why? Quoting Gabe, from Penny Arcade: (...)to make this Christmas really special for a lot of very sick kids. (...)Some of these kids are in pretty bad shape and just having a Game Boy would really raise their spirits. (...) Let’s give these kids the Christmas that they deserve and let’s give the news papers a different kind of story to write about gamers. Original post -> here<-(last article). Where? Actually, since you can donate through internet, everywhere, but if you want to volunteer to work directly with them or know where your donation is going: Children's Hospitals affiliated can be seen on Child's Play site. At this moment there are 75 (if I counted right) children's hospitals affiliated to which you can donate, not only on North America, also on UK, Cairo, New Zealand and Australia (the three latter figure as PayPal only). How? You can help the kids by buying the gifts on the wish lists of each hospital on Amazon, or donating money which will be used to buy said things. To view the wish list of each children's hospital simply click the hospital in the map of the site childsplaycharity.org/index.php (though, as mentioned before, some figure as PayPal only). Some items will be kept by the children, and some others (like consoles) will stay in the hospitals. They are also registered on eBay's Giving Works, which means that you can sell and buy for them there too (they can't accept used toys and consoles, but you could sell them on eBay and give what you get to them). It is even as simple as texting GAMERS to 50555 to donate $5. You can also mail checks to them to: Child’s Play 123 NW 36th Street Suite 210 Seattle, WA 98107 You can also buy toys yourself and pass them to their office, or heck, why not, buy a toy yourself and give it yourself to the hospital (even if that wouldn't really be a donation to Child's Play, but rather children themselves ) When? From the FAQ: Q. How long does Child’s Play run? A. Child’s Play collects donations year round. However, our annual toy drive only runs from November to the end of December, so our website is updated only during these months. Please be mindful of the shipping dates when you’re purchasing items from the wish list. In order to make sure that they get to the kids for the holidays, the hospitals would like to receive everything by December 20th. More here: childsplaycharity.org/about.phpAnd you can follow them on Twitter or join them on Facebook for updates and whatnot. EDIT @swim: They don't want wrapped gift becase wrapping just generates problems and waste. And actually, it's over 70 hospitals (again, 75 if I counted right) The medical problems related to gifts, as knowbodi says, are with things as stuffed animals, about them the hospitals say: " collect germ and aren't good for the kids."

Hmm.. I would research, but I think Lyserg got it all.. Or not.
Child's Play benefits 60 hospitals worldwide Also, you should NOT wrap your gift. Hospitals don't want some type of medical problem with the wrapping. If you live near one of the hospitals they support, there should be a wish list, to see what some of the kids want!
Hope that helps a bit. I'll find out as mch more as I can!

Also no stuffed animals. They say too many germs/allergies etc to allow them.
They also do events to try to raise money/awareness. If you click on the event tab, it brings up things that they are doing in the near future, some of them online challenges like the Dec 15th they will be playing a zombie game and every dollar raises the kill count by 100..... which could be tied into a great "but they need your help" etc line :-)
