Team for designing the new sidebar. We need to figure out a layout that will look good on the forums without making them look too cluttered. You don't have to know HTML or anything but if you do, that's a bonus because we can make prototypes. The proper coding will be in the next stage of the sidebar project.
So yeah, say if you're in and I'll shove you on the list. Anyone can join the team, even if you're on another team already.
I'll post some of my ideas later on today.
Team: Sidebar Layout Design Team Team Leader: UnfairBear Team Members: Main Goal: Decide on a nice looking features bar to be implemented later by coders. Small Goals (if any): Tasks to reach main/small goals: 1. Decide on features and functions of the bar 2. Have some people draw up rough prototypes for the layout 3. Make a poll for other members to vote on their favourite prototypes (2/3) 4. Make more realistic looking prototypes of the winning drafts 5. Make another poll to decide on the final design 6. Pass design on to coders

Okay, task 1: Functions and features. Heres some of the things I think it should have:
Featured Debate(s) Featured Creative Thread (s) Features Project(s) Featured Discussion(s) Latest PogoTok
There can be lots of different stuff, so, yeah, what do you (currently non-existant) guys think? =P
The Featured Discussion is something im gonna explain in another thread soonish.

I like this. It will help bring attention to the threads that are currently active.

Can it have like a "sign up for X thing" function. Like, if there is a project or RPG that needs people to sign-up it gets featured?

It would be easy to me to set up the header in here to look exactly like the one on the front page (I mean making the announcements box have the pogotok video on the right).
For the sidebar, I think a list of Featured Projects/Debates/Latest Videos/Tweets would be the best option, probably only showing one of these lists, having the other hidden but visible trough a tab bar at the top (I'll make a mockup soon).
Besides that, perhaps a login form, which is replaced with the user dropdown on the navbar when logged in (one thing tough, I think the navbar list should be kept anyway). Oh, and a search bar (using Google Search).

That is what worries me. The sidebar has the exact same size as the one on the front page, yet, it is much more cramped in the forums (and although it wouldn't bother much on the front page, it would bother on the discussions themselves).
There are, therefore, 2 alternatives: we could reduce the sidebar size, or we could change layout (remove redundant stuff from the discussion's appearance so more space is just for the discussion itself).
In other situations, I'd suggest we replaced the small user info "post sidebar" with just the username below the post's title, much more like posts and comments on regular blogs. This would allow for much more space for the discussion itself. But, in proboards, I don't know if it is possible.

Yeah I see what you mean. Is it possible to put the sidebar in a different layer? Liiiiike this: DISCLAIMER: I realise this is not pretty, I just threw it together. Final design should be lots nicer, I just fail at 5-minute-photoshop >.> OH and the sidebar would be sticky, ie it would stay where it was when you scroll down

Alternatively we could use your one and just have the sidebar in the Main layout so it wouldn't affect threads.

I see what you mean, what worries me is that in such way, it might remove cohesion with the rest of the site... (the front page, wiki and forum all follow the same design (and even navigation) lines, moving the sidebar like so could be slightly awkward for new users).
Nonetheless, I'll try the sidebars and see what can be done.

It's nice to have a locked section that follows you throughout the forum

I have some pretty weak HTML skills, organizing skills, and an eye for good web-page designs.

why not just replace the announcement header? Do you mean get rid of it and have the sidebar? Or just put the content we want to put in the sidebar into the announcement header? Cause the latter would be extremely messy... But just putting the announcements in the sidebar instead of its own bar is a good idea..

The sidebar would follow you to every page, unlike the Announcements header.

i mean replace the announcement header with what you would be putting in the sidebar. that would follow you through the forum. alternatively you could shrink the size of the forum body and use the extra space for a sidebar...as it is now you may not have enough space especially for users on netbooks
