In this thread, we shall list the pros and cons of moving to phpBB or vBulletin. Note that even if the Pros outweigh the Cons, there is no guarantee that we could actually move. We just want to critically think about it.Pros- Merging of Threads
- Moderation logs displayed to all staff
- Ability to create various usergroups
- More control over polls (editing, etc.)
- Posts will not show that they have been edited if the edit was done within 5 minutes of them being posted
- Contacts/Buddies/Friends list
- Customizable profiles
- Visitor Messages
- Proper "New Posts" button
- Social Groups
- A "Search" function that actually works properly
- Quick, easy access to the moderator/administrator logs
- Much more flexible permissions settings (and easier to set)
- Easier to quote people
- Multi-quote
- Better IP Search
- Ability to Search a user's posts
- Having subforums that don't "bury" the threads they hold (Confused? Here's a handy explanation.)
Cons- Everyone could have to register again
- Old posts could be lost
- Drama from those who oppose the move
- Loss of contact with a figure such as Patrick
- We've already built ourselves up here, and we might be building up for a 3rd time, or rebuilding our first home ~Zang
We'll edit this list as more suggestions are made.

The other forum I administrate moved from FluxBB to phpBB and some legendary fellow was able to migrate all the accounts and posts over. Just sayin'.

Hi. My name is Jocelyn.
I'm not against this or anything, but when did this idea pop up?

This idea has always existed. We just wanted to, you know, actually really talk about it now.

If we move, will everything on proboards be documented? What I mean to say is, will we still be able to access it, or will it be deleted?

I assume it would be archived like the old moon. Personally, I would like a move. The only really bad con is loss of Patrick.

How is that a pro?
Yes, but I quite like to be able to click the time stamp and go to the post
wuzzat?
If we move to phpBB, wouldn't we use the one we started with and just move back? Then anyone who joined before March 2nd would already have an account.
Also add to the cons "We've already built ourselves up here, and we might be building up for a 3rd time, or rebuilding our first home"

It's just an annoyance that even a quick edit right after you post (to fix a typo or something you said weirdly) shows the post was edited. It's insanely minor. Yes, but I quite like to be able to click the time stamp and go to the post You... can still quote in that manner on phpBB or vBulletin. It's a feature where you can essentially check off several posts and then just hit "quote" and all the checked off posts are automatically quoted in your reply (rather than having to hit "quote" on several posts and then copying and pasting). If we move to phpBB, wouldn't we use the one we started with and just move back? Then anyone who joined before March 2nd would already have an account. I'm not exactly sure about this, actually. Though the name "real" was taken on the old boards so I signed up under "varygoode", so that would need to be rectified.

Kinda messes up some of the forum games though =P This is a post from the old forum. As far as I know, you can't click on the quote to take you to the original post. (never played around with vBulletin though) There also isn't a "link to post" button on phpBB (again, this is as far as I know, and never tried vBulletin)

i dont care about any of the pros or cons...aside from this. i dont want to have to rebuild the forum again...if we can migrate all the posts and threads, and thread/board structure, then go for it. if not...then i say we stay here.

I agree we should move...
But then again... I would say only do it if we can transfer the people...

I really think that moving would be a good idea. I mean, ProBoards is ok, but sometimes SPOTM is down for no reason, and moving to another system would mean that we would get more ways to modify the forum (like adding blogs and stuff like that). I think we should reopen the old forum and go back there. That way, we wouldn't need to have everyone to re-register.

It's easier for spam bots to register on a PhP board. Sooo if you wanna be dealing with lots of spam bots than... yah. Depending on what version of vbulletin you get will impact. I know the new vbulletin 4 has a blog like system that could be implemented well within the pogotribe. I don't know much of the details but I know people who've liked it. I don't mind moving, mainly cause proboards sucks.

Personally, I kinda like the ProBoards forum at least better than the phpBB one, although I wouldn't really mind moving back or to another system, such as vBulletin. But if so then I'd suggest finding a way to export all user accounts/forum posts to the new forum. It's easier for spam bots to register on a PhP board. Sooo if you wanna be dealing with lots of spam bots than... yah. umm...actually, phpBB (which I assume you meant) has support for both normal Captcha and reCaptcha, so that is absolutely not a problem.

I have moderated a forum that was phpBB and we had Captcha and even where we have to approve posts prior and it still was a problem. o.o Google even flagged us for a bit cause of spam bots. So it was still a problem.
