Dear Dan, I respect you. You are indeed a very interesting person and while I don't always agree with your ideas and opinions I can respect you. However, with your life going into chaos soon, I wanted to get this out so you might be able to see it. I started watching you most likely over a year ago. Your videos were different then most of the others I had seen on youtube. They were anintelligent discourse into current events and old topics. I enjoyed listening to differing points of view and looked forward to your videos each week. However that all changed when the FSM video hit. I do not wish to dwell upon this one video any more than that was when you became an intelligent person whose opinions I enjoyed hearing, and turned into... well... Fred. Since that time, you have engaged the community again, a good thing I might add, but also your videos took a huge turn downward. Recent additions of the moderator module on youtube, your videos have suffered even more. While I cannot fault you for this because, well let's face it, if you show what the people want to see, they will watch and this is your job after all, your audience isn't always the most... enlightened group of individuals. While not dwelling on the subject too much, a final thought is there was a reason in the old days that cartoons came on at 3 and went off at 5 and Prime Time held something different. Now your project is out and many are talking about how awesome it is. My personal opinion is located here However, I hope you have thought of the fact that a great many of your followers are in their early teens. Now as I have explained in my thread, I'm not saying that don't have good or even great ideas, but is instead something to dwell on. I intend to help for a little while anyway. You can find the ideas off the top of my head here, and I plan on listing them as soon as the source comes out to do so. However, I do not hold much hope for this project of yours. Instead I fully expect this year to be more of a fear factor/Truman Show. I hope I am wrong for both our sakes, but only time will tell. You have my support for now, Dan, even though I don't feel the project lived up to it's hype. I'll do what I can when I can, but I won't be able to stand to watch an intelligent person's life turned into a cartoon. At that point, there is no return and you have sold yourself out to this "new media" and in effect have become nothing more than a whore of the business. ....... PDBAZ

PDBAZ...Wow, I just realized how ironic that is now. Dan's gonna be a professional puppet for a year. Literally.

I just think it's funny that Dan's tagline for a while has been PDBAZ (Please Dont' Be A Zombie), yet he's going to open up his life to do whatever anyone tells him.
Isn't that being a zombie?

So it takes 7 months of preparation to say "Uh...Hey guys, what should I do today?" PS - Refresh my memory - What's FSM stand for?

So it takes 7 months of preparation to say "Uh...Hey guys, what should I do today?" Okay, I know I've mentioned TONS of times that I develop web interface for a living, but it's relevant this time!!! I dunno, seems to me, the bulk of what could have POSSIBLY taken up this much time for his project (...and yes, I'm assuming.) would be creating the interactive interface design for the whole voting and rating system of ideas...Which isn't that complex of a concept by nature. It makes me wonder if Dan's either developing a call centre, or has a REALLY shitty UI design and PHP programming team if it took 7 months to create it? ...Then again, it's late and I've had a couple beers so I'm probably just reading way too deep into something (context wise) I know nothing about

nah...the project is fucking bullshit, and a waste of time. you aren't reading too much into it. there isn't enough there to read into.

A funny thought just hit me.
So when Dan, a dude with a huge following and of great influence, presents this idea at a spectacular event like vidcon - It can be (and has been) marketed on a rather large scale and will receive a ton of attention...And will ultimately be successful by virtue of popularity alone, regardless of the outcome.
But if someone like you or I (relatively unknown in terms of any kind of media) presented the EXACT same idea...How would it be received? Hardly at all, me thinks.

Well I won't deny the first thought out of my mind was a 5 day a week vlog for the next year with tons of people watching as Dan raked in the money documentary style. While I hope his goals are a little more noble than cash, I expect him to come out fairly well on the green side of things. No one said he was stupid. He purposefully did this at vidcon where a bunch of youtube people were including YTcelebs. His subs and views will rise no doubt.

lol 6 months of planning: k, basically Dan had to wrap up all his commitments. Any projects or deals (heck if I know... he's busy all the time for SOME reason) or blah blah blah he was working on needed to come to a close. He couldn't very well go into the project having other things to do. His last commitment to anything was VidCon, and he decided rather early on that he would announce the project at VidCon. At the time, he was still in school, and as school doesn't end until May or June, it was perfect timing. School didn't end up being another commitment, though, but that's not to say he didn't have other things... like VidCon, for example. Also, um, he kind of needed money. Whether it was through sponsorships or gathering his OWN money, there needed to be a lot of it at the start... and throughout. Dan doesn't have a money tree, either, guys. The money he makes from his videos during the year will go to Dan 3.0 and the projects that arise from it. Obviously he'll need some to you know, eat food, and... pay the government and shiz, but the rest goes to the project. Either way, I'm preettttttty freaking sure, had VidCon been 2 or 3 months ago, this project would have been announced 2 or 3 months ago. O.o I'm not sure why you guys think he's been creating a website for 6 months..? Weird lol. And yeah, I don't really enjoy Dan's videos anymore. That I can agree with you on. Before the moderator module, and outside of videos, though, he's a pretty cool guy. However, you guys bashing him like this without knowing the full story or all the details of his project has left me a bit disgusted... I know quite a bit more (as far as details go) about the project, and even then, I'm faaaaaaaar (so far) from knowing everything. I dunno. I'm definitely not a fangirl, and I'd hesitate before calling Dan a "friend," but I don't like this thread. I feel like there's so much assuming, and people are just jumping on the assumption bandwagon because they expected something else from the project, and want some way to hate on Dan for their disappointment. Ick. Also, Nick (IF THAT IS YOUR REAL NAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!11), why are you so damn paranoid? Your old, grey-haired experience and "wisdom" has no place amongst us youngsters. WE CAN DO ANYTHING.

as did I :-)
And I agree, fish gotta swim, birds gotta eat. I believe that Newschooled was trying to find a reason for it taking so long for the announcement. His prior commitments I admit I did not think about as this has been so long in the making it was an assumtion of mine that all his schedule and announcement could have been cleared weeks if not months before vidcon. As for my "paranoia", it's the way I operate. Coming up with ideas is not my strong trait. However, developing those ideas, weeding out ways for it to go wrong and ensuring that those flaws in the plan have as little chance as possible to come to fruition is pretty much my forte. I'm running with what I've been given and there has been no one to say I'm wrong until now. Dan just left without any other word nor suggestion that more details (except where to add ideas and how to vote) is forthcoming. This was his announcement and if this is all there is, this is what I have to say. If there is more, he should have said something.
So about knowing more.... not that the cat is out, do tell.

I agree with most of this. except this: You have my support for now, Dan, even though I don't feel the project lived up to it's hype. Maybe it didn't live up to YOUR expectations but to me, it was greater than anything that i could think of. That could be different for many people though. So yeah. Good way to sum it up.
