Have you attempted "early to bed early to rise" ? I'd have to agree with your school on this one because 8 tardies is ridiculous and detention is >not< that bad at all. Also, if your mother's that sick I'm sure she would appreciate the removal of the chore of getting you up. Also most side appliances like phones or ds's or psp's have alarms in them. I am a teenage boy, so waking up is difficult. I literally put my phone on alarm mode and put it in a lock box right near my head and then put the key on the other side of the room so that I cannot sleep through it... It works. It isn't fair to say that the situation isn't your fault, because you're not doing everything in your power to avoid it, and by doing that you are not taking full responsibility and minor discipline like detention might do you some good. As far as skipping school goes, your parents are paying good money for your education. You will understand a days worth of education when you work a job where an hour's worth of work earns enough to buy one box of breakfast cereal. Take some action to ameliorate your situation, never waste a day of school. Even if it's public school, your parents are still paying taxes to pay for your education.

coming in late interrupts class and the teacher teaching. it's annoying how so many people (at my school) think they can come in whenever they want. i actually care to learn and so I am on time every morning. to me, it's just disrespectful to the teacher and the other students who want to learn if there are constantly people coming in late. i think there should be more punishments for being late, besides the fact that at my school no one actually notices it except for teachers who just write those students down as missing. they don't ever get into real trouble so yeah. it's annoying. If the teacher ignores them and keeps teaching then it doesnt really interrupt anyone. If they stop and yell and the person for being late for 10 minutes then thats the teacher's fault since there's no point and theyre the ones wasting time. I hate it when teachers waste like 20 mins of class giving out about something. So stupid..

Maybe schools should lower the grades of late students. After all school is just to prepair students for real jobs. One of the things I always hated during high school was when a teacher would include attendance when grading (I should probably mention that I had attendance issues, which no doubt influences my opinion ;D). Grading is sketchy enough since it should be a representation of your knowledge on a subject, not work ethic (I suppose this is debatable, but this is my opinion of what a grade should be). In university there are almost always a few students that are late to class and, in most cases, they are not disruptive at all. If the first few minutes of a class are truly important, then the student is punished simply by not being there, since they out on important information; If the first few minutes are not important then the student being late is irrelevant. I think AkeR hit the nail on the head with the whole "negative reinforcement" thing, in that punishment like detention is not really about improving the student, and I'd go as far to say that it is simply to assert the school's authority, and in that sense it is necessary to keep the "troubled" students in line.

Grading is sketchy enough since it should be a representation of your knowledge on a subject, not work ethic It seems to change a little bit from teacher to teacher but mostly it is based on how much you know on the subject. The little parts that change are how much teachers value home work and tests over your other day to day assignments and this I think is wrong because it just puts alot of presure on most kids at the end of each semester. Personally though I just never studied because I felt, that's what all that time in class between tests was for and there was really no reason to study anything that hasn't allready been covered in class. And technically, I'm right, most tests with the exception of star testing and SAT don't cover anything that you haven't allready been taught so the last min. all night study session is really rather pointless except to drain your energy before the test. (I should also note that I was never really the smartest person in class but I never failed a test either. I just passes at about average.) Thing that really annoys me is teachers who spend the entire class talking and then wander why I never get any work done. I had a computer class in high school which I was failing mostly due to the fact that we weren't actully allowed to touch the computers until after he was done with the lecture and there was a long lecture every single freaking day. The class is like 2 hours long and we only had 5 min. to do what took him nearly the entire class period to exsplain. The other part of it was the fact that I have a creative mind and he gave out few creative assignments so the work I did manage to do never made up for all the work I never turned in. So basically he'd spend 2 hours talking about stuff that was in the computer manual and then I spend 5 min. reading the manual to find out what the first thing he said was. Yeah short term memory loss. What was I talking about?

In a real job if you show up late, some employers dock your pay for the amount of time you were late. Makes perfect sense in an hourly job, why get paid for time you weren't there. Maybe schools should lower the grades of late students. After all school is just to prepair students for real jobs. School should be alot more like having a real job. They lowered MY grades when I was late for school. If I was absent 3 times without a note in a quarter, they'd lower it by a whole grade

Arrogant teachers who blindly punish kids for being excusably late should receive the arrogant behavior of skipping school in return.

Care to rephrase? lol Typo, that was suppose to say marking not making. Had a conversation with a teacher on the way to class once. It was something to the effect of I thought I was late, ran into the teacher started walking to class with the teach and on the way I said "I thought I was late but I guess if you're not in class yet I must be right on time." and the response was "Actually, we're both late."

How do you think about the students being on time and the teacher late. Story of my life. Yeah I had a moment like that where an entire class was locked out of the class room while the teacher was in a meeting. Couple other teachers walked by and asked why we we're in class, pointed at the door and said "Our teacher isn't in the room and the door is locked."

Our teacher arrived ~9:28 and then at the end of the period yelled at us because he didn't finish his lesson. Seriously. And then he came down to my 8th period class and yelled at us again because he got through more than he had planned with his 7th period. Seriously.
