And let's be honest, there is no reason to go to college anymore. The main reason to go to college is to get a career to make more money. Our goals should not be for monetary profit but for complimenting human nature individually, furthering the human race and protecting the environment. Good luck furthering the human race or protecting the environment without a college degree... And there are plenty of college degrees that prove your thesis wrong. I really doubt that Dance majors or Philosophy majors think they're going to get a great career and rake in the cash.

I really doubt that Dance majors or Philosophy majors think they're going to get a great career and rake in the cash. That's because dance majors and philosophy majors are genuinely interested in those topics. I'm talking much more general than specific majors or career paths. Money is the only thing that "matters" these days.

I hate them they waist our money because as a kid school is your job. This job gets you edjumacaiton and education makes it easier to get a job. Thus in this case edjucation=money and then we don't have to take all the ones that they give us. There are so many and waisting that time will loose us money. : D

It is good that we have some sort of test that "everyone" takes. I have taken both of them, twice. Colleges put enough emphasis on them for when you are applying. Colleges look at other things besides your SAT score: GPA, extra-ciricular activites, awards, etc...
There's nothing wrong with these exams. I tend to do bad on tests because halfway through I'll stop caring about the exam because it's so boring and I don't want to be there. I cannot write essays on the spot. I need to time to write it, read over it, revise it. But that's just my own personal opinion. The writing portion, no matter how much I hate it, is good for the exam overall. It adds more value to the exam, not just bubbling in little circles. Person A and Person B could both circle the same circles, but that does not automatically mean that they are of the same intelligence level. The essay part allows you to really show them what you have to bring. Most of the time the topic is broad enough anyway, it's not like it will be something you have never heard about before.
Due to my laziness and short attention span, I have decided not to read your lengthy post. SAT's are valuable, so are essays.

Standardized testing is BS. It takes all the fun out of school. When the whole school year is spent preparing for a test what's the point? If that's the whole point of schooling then WHAT IS the point? Plus it doesn't measure ANYTHING! Say Joe Schmo is a bad test taker but he's brilliant. He gets bad grades on the test and he's put into a sped(Special Education) class. The rest of next year he's feeling ridiculously dumb and feels like he's getting stupider by the minute. His great mind is being used for NOTHING. Let me give everyone an example of why standardized tests are complete bulls***. So last year my school did badly on the NJASK(New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge) (Which can be proven wrong here: www.greatschools.org/modperl/achievement/nj/2113#standards) and now we have this thing called Project Succeed. What Project Succeed is is classes that teach us basic skills we learned in like 4th grade (BTW I'm in 7th grade now). What's complete crap about this is that they had my Science teacher teach Math. When we would ask her a question on it she would say "I can't really help you since I don't know enough about it to answer it". Plus it puts the kids who can go ahead in stuff easy work instead of more advanced stuff. It's SO stupid!!!

Standardized testing is overemphasized. Sure it's important, but it really isn't that important. Some people are not even good at testing. Why is it so important that we sit down in a room that is completely quiet to answer a few questions that don't even truly test our ability of learning? I've taken the ACT 7 times, and it seems like every time that I've taken it, it's been more about memorization. Also, with all these standardized tests, they don't test what you know, only what you can memorize and read. Take the science, reading, and english portions of the ACT for example. It's all about reading and answering questions afterwards. Nothing about what you already know. Now obviously, you have to know how to do math to do that section. And throughout all of this, I'm not saying these tests are bad either. It's just that I'm sure there is a more efficient way to determine a way for students to test their knowledge than these tests.

I haven't taken the SAT yet but I'm going to soon.
Where I live we have what's called SOL (yes, it's as bad as it sounds) or Standards of Learning and it's basically a minimum competency test. It's such as waste of time and money. For example, if there's 60 questions, you can get 27 questions right and still pass. (Way to teach kids to work hard right?) The minimum score to pass is 400 and a perfect score is 600. I can get 600s without even trying, and I'm not an extremely bright student (I get B's in EVERYTHING ugh)
It also limits the teacher's creativity because they have to teach to these specific SOLs that we have to know by the day of the test. It makes the curriculum way more boring, it's just horrid.
Cliff Notes:
The test is a piece of SHIRT.

I think standardized testing is essential, but some people interpret it wrongly. The role of standardized testing is to measure one's competency as regards the current knowledge of the subject as sat by the board. It is important to rate people. But standardized testing does NOT measure one's overall potential for success.

One reason I really dislike standardized tests in high schools (not really talking about the SATs here) is because the teachers have to backtrack and teach to the test, if that makes sense. Like, here in Pennsylvania, we have what are called PSSAs. When I was in 5th grade you took them in 5th, 6th, 8th and 11th grades and only covered math, reading, and writing. Teachers talked about them but we didn't spend much time covering them, mostly because they were that easy. For example, for the 5th grade test it was like 2nd grade math. Now, they have to take them in almost every grade and they keep adding on more subjects. Also, teachers are spending a month MINIMUM reviewing for the test. This wastes valuable time in my opinion. And who decides the standards? Some old dude that went to the school in the 50s when times were different? Also, why are we cutting arts out of the schools. Some kids may be horrible at math, but art or music maybe their forte. Just a touchy subject with me.

Alright, so I have a persuasive speech coming up about standardized testing. More specifically, how its disadvantages outweigh its benefits. If any of you could point me in the direction of sources I could use, that would be awesome. Also, if you could point out what some of the main points are to the disadvantages of standardized testing, I'd greatly appreciate it.
