so long as this technology remains with cells, we need not worry about zombies. But I agree - this technology in the wrong hands could prove incredibly lethal. No, THIS. A zombie-esque disease would not be effectively spread through a cellular host of DNA, it would only spread full out zombieism if it were in the form of a virus. (So, as long as this technology stays in cells we're A.O.K)

Wrong on both accounts Tyme. It is feasible to create a synthetic pathogen of a non-viral nature that is still extremely virulent and could create the so-called "zombie effect". But even if it weren't, it is not a step forward to make a virus from this technology, it is a step backward. I've since researched the topic extensively, and I've watched some documentaries following the process by which synthetic life has developed from beginning to end. The creation of synthetic viruses was one of the early steps on the road to synthetic life. Viruses were the easy part, autonomous living synthetic cells was the real challenge.
After taking in the full-scope and the details of this new breakthrough, I am now thoroughly convinced that literally ANYTHING could be done with this new technology.
