Which one should count more towards going to college? (note the / doesn't mean divide its linking the two simlur things)
Where I'm at class rank/gpa count like 30x more than standarized test scores. Here is the funny thing though I score almost perfect on standarized tests I'm ranked 13/28 and have a cumulitive GPA of like 3.5 going into my Junior year. Even funnier still almost everyone in my class cheats(in fact make that everyone but me). I mean is it so much to ask people to do your own work and not help eachother on it or copy answers or use other unfair advantages?

It's really difficult to choose... both are flawed systems. GPA is unreliable because different schools have different standards. I have a teacher that has flat-out said that my school is more lenient with grading than schools around us, so something like a 70 at my school is only worth about a 60 or 65 for other schools. But standardized test scores aren't a good way of evaluating people either because they only test you based on left-brained thinking, and it's been proven that success in life has virtually no connection to having superior left-brained thinking abilities. I think the idea behind standardized tests is good, but the test themselves need to be fixed. So with the 2 systems as they are now, I think they should be counted equally.

I think that GPA should be the most important factor. Standardized tests do not accurately represent your typical performance in school, where as your grades are long-term and show how you are more likely to perform in college. When taking a single test you can have an off day - and one mistake should not be a detriment to your entire college career. I just don't think that SO much weight should be placed on a single score... whereas your GPA encompasses your typical/overall efforts.

Standardized Testing should count for like 50% of selection for college. GPA shouldn't count for much. I have a GPA of only about 3.5 also, but my standardized testing is above average. A lot of kids in my school with their pretty 4.0 GPAs have below average standardized testing scores. Most of them get their GPA by either A.) Having helicopter parents come to their rescue B.) Have a parent working at the school
or
C.) Cheat
Unless you spend 24/7 doing school, I have trouble believing you can keep a 4.0 GPA. Unless, of course, you take cooking classes.

If you get average or below average constantly, you can't say you were having off-days.

Honestly though, since when is math (a section that both tests have) left-brained? XD In response to the OP - I'd have to say standardized testing. Like Chels pointed out, difficulty varies from school to school. I can definitely testify this after going to an IB school for 3 years of high school, then moving to a school in the middle of nowhere and making A's that mean nothing to me. xD

The standardized tests are. ACT is much more right-brain oriented. Both tests have school elemets testing your knowledge, and both include time management and tests the way you work. Important things for the real world. Not perfect tests, but alot better than GPA which can vary.

Cortney, beginning a sentence with "But" is perfectly acceptable tyvm. And math is too left-brained thinking! You follow a set of steps, and come to one answer. There's no creativity involved. I just read a book about this stuff

I'm sorry, math is extremely right brained, if you're in the right type math - granted, HS math is not right brained at all (unless you're in calculus, that uses plenty of right brain)

I just read a book about this stuff Math is a lot deeper than that. Saying math is just following a set of rules is not correct. Math is used to maximize the profit with the amount of resources given, help curve grades so the average will always be at least a C, determine future problems using given statistics, and much more. Math isn't just following a set of rules and coming out with a single answer (That's very simple math).

My PLAN test scores: Composite: 23 English: 19 Mathematics: 28 Reading: 20 Science: 26 My composite is 93% its my english usage/mechanics at a 8 that brought me down so much my pre-algebra/algebra is at 100% though Those are my scores The %'s are 93,72,98,78,98. English and Reading at a C or C+ everythign else at an A. I really hate English; to be honest, they need to take it off this test. My estimated ACT range is 24-28 but I haven't taken it yet. Usange/Mechanics with the 8 is 55% Rhetorical Skills saved me with a 12 at 89% though. Geometry was 95% with a 14. Perfect score is a 16 which was my Alg. Just thought I'd share that D:

I have a 4.0 and I barley have trouble. I spend little time on homework, and hardly ever study. School comes easy, and I've lost alot of friends who have the same mindset as you, thinking I cheat. Just because I don't flaunt it dosent mean I didn't earn it.

I never called you out saying you cheated. Just so you know, bragging about how you are smart really doesn't get you anywhere. I have a kid in my school who brags all the time about how he's smarter than me because he was a 4.0GPA and I just ignore him because I could care less that he's smarter than me.

What is with the reading and English on those? I mean ,seriously, I speak it and read it and write it fluently. Why on Earth do I need to take a test over that? They should test me on my Spanish, now that would be a test (I'd ace it cause I passed Spanish II with a 96%). I see why they wouldn't though since not everyone speaks Spanish or if they use French or something. Put moar math on there plox

I took that test a year and a half ago, and I want to retake it so my composite is at least 30. My dad refuses to register me for it. He says, "Those grades will get you into s state college. They're good enough." They may get me into a state school, but they aren't high enough to get me full rides to the state schools. I'm going to have to wait until the end of my Jr. year to take it again lol.

I'm going to be a Jr. I'm confident in my math and science skills its the reading and English that are going to kill me. The usage/mechanics part especially, it's just such bull shirt. If you want to talk about left brained let's start there. English has this set rules you follow them, yet you break them almost constantly. I think English should be streamlined, but that's a different thread in the debate section.

I know, I was just saying that the way you wrote it you made it seem as if those three were the only option. And I hate kids that talk about their intelligence. Whenever I talk about it, either I am joking and actig like a jerk on purpose for a laugh, or I get angry at someone. Once a douche in my class was talking about how he was the friggin smartest, and he was showing his test to everyone, and he called me out and said what'd you get, and I would tell him, and he started calling me retarded and SHIRT like that, and so I flipped out and showed him it, and it was the same as his. Whenever I have to talk about it to relatives or something, I feel really uncomfotable. And I am getting kind of mad so i'm done.
