So, I think i'm used to everyone around me knowing about computers, their software and most anything that is going on in the technological world. For me it just seemed like a characteristic of our generation and most likely future ones.
That was until two days ago. When I was put in a group for my Journalism class. One of my classmates suggested we used a video from the internet, but they had no idea how to download a video to which one asked if we should tape the computer screen. So I told them how to, and din't think much of it. But then later in class my teacher was going on and on about how America's funniest videos was better than Youtube... yea, than youtube...
So my question is, are we all meeting with people like ourselves and not realizing how many others are clueless about the internet world? or are the people from my class just crazy...

There really are some technologically illiterate people in the world. Like when i try to explain to people what i do on youtube like watch my subscribers and stuff and they dont understand that youtube is more than cute cats and people falling off of skateboards. They dont realize there is a real community that have discussions and debates and interact. Yeah. Not everyone understands

I think if you never met anyone before who doesn't know/care much for the internet, you must have a rather small social circle :/ I dunno, but I have geeky friends, party friends, music friends, blah blah blah :/ So yeah, I guess I was rather aware of that and I don't think it's strange
And the great majority of the people are clueless about this btw.. so if you want to label someone crazy, you're probably the one (since you don't apply to the standard of not knowing about the internet

I think it's really just a case of forward-thinking vs. backward-thinking. A lot of people are deliberately ignorant as to the complex mechanisms of the intrawebz. Older people in particular are the most susceptible to this mindset, as computers weren't an incredibly prevalent part of everyday society until after the majority of their learning was over, and god knows how people hate adapting to change, especially with age.

It just really surprised me that the people from my journalism class didn't know much about youtube or the interwebs... and yea I think I am crazy xD

well it's just a matter of interests really.. It's not like Youtube or the internet is important at the moment, so there's no reason to look into it except for finding it interesting (like us )

I've been amazed by the fact that someone doesn't know RayWilliamJohnson several times. It's odd.
Then again, it's not vital information, is it. Downloading a video might be pretty important, but knowing about this social networking thing isn't necessary for everyone. You don't care about what you don't know about (literally translated Dutch expression, I'm sorry).

Some people don't even have an excuse. I met someone in 2007 who somehow graduated from Computer Science at University of Waterloo without ever having learned anything about the internet. She had no idea what a blog was, and was so stuck to the ancient Linux terminal interface that she was irked by websites that weren't designed to be viewed in a monospace, monochrome, text-only interface (i.e. all websites other than obsolete mailing list archives). That kind of extreme isolation from the real world leaves me speechless.

The average person really isn't as computer literate as you would think. I come across this all the time at my graphic design job - Mostly with people who are clueless about resolution and image sizing. They'll give me a thumbnail size image, and then wonder why it won't cover a billboard with perfect clarity. *facepalm*

Actually, come to think of it, there's a lot of so-called "technological illiterates" here in Sweden. A lot of people know how to use Facebook, but really, not much else. People having knowledge of technological progress and social networking sites like Twitter, and using Youtube in a more vast sense, is scarce. Also, I'm sure many people wouldn't care if their computer ran on Vista or Windows 7 either, as long as it works. Also, during my life, I have only met like two persons IRL than owns an iPhone.
I guess it's a matter of where your interests lie, like Yokailo pointed out.

Owning an iPhone =/= being computer savvy.

It's not like ... the internet is important at the moment ... Please consider revising your statement. The Internet is one of the most important things, if not the single most important thing in the entire world right now. PS: I have/love iPhones. I think it helps in computer savvyness. Most iPhone users I know have a marginally above average technical inclination or better, why else would they have iPhones after all? Not saying to be tech savvy you need to own an iPhone, just saying that I would wager that the population of iPhone owners has a higher average of technological literacy than that of the rest of the public.

People did just fine about 20 or 30 years ago without the internet. I don't see how it's is so vital today, please elaborate if you can.

I'm often surprise about how many I know, know lots of stuff about some parts of computer/internet.. or those who also know RWJ..
I guess the internet is something lots of people don't really talk about, at least not what the do (*awaits joke*) on it.
But yeah, I also know those kind of people who don't know much about the internet BTW don't say that older people don't wanna learn about the internet/computer because I also know lots of elderly people who know much about it.. some do even know more than an average internet-kid..
so yeah, I guess we're just in between 2 phases, the non-internet one (as we know it now) and the internet-people.. This also reminds me of a youtube video;

Our lifestyles in the greater western world are increasingly becoming shaped around the internet. It is the dominant means of communication if only second to the telephone...sometimes. But it's created not only it's own, but countless industries and forms of media. I'm a graphic designer. I rely on the internet to feed my family...And it does! 10 years ago, an average graphic designer wasn't anything close to a web designer. Now web design is a standard skill in most graphic designer's bag of tools. And yes, people got by 30 years ago just fine. Times change though. People got by fine without indoor plumbing, modern medicine, and cars 300 years ago. (For the most part) Not having that nowadays in the western world would make things a little more difficult to say the least.

There are people in my grade that can't send an e-mail. Their mothers do it for them. Meanwhile, I'm programming a video game with a team of about 15 people from all over the world while taking part in one of the best communities on the Internet.
They're missing out on so much.

I asked someone if they knew how to send an e-mail and they said, "On Facebook or AIM?"
I DIED.

The person I asked was in accelerated science. That means they're better in school than most people. That's really scary.
