Heya, reading this book right here: Basically a ton of economics articles: Very refreshing and mind opening for someone who has never studied economics (like myself).

I just felt like I needed to add this. Factoring Humanity is such a PogoTribe book. It's about how aliens try to contact the human race. The main character dechipers the message somewhat and thereby is granted access to what the book calls the "collective consciousness" of the human race. It's in the 4th dimension to an extent (4 dimension = time). The most interesting part is when the collective consciousnesses of the human and the alien race meet, which happens as the aliens finally draw near the Earth. The result is that as a whole, the collective consciousness of humans begins to gain the ability to perceive empathy. It's described like this: If a child grows up completely cut off from contact with any living creature from birth, it will fail to comprehend that anyone can exist outside itself and therefore has no capacity for empathy, sort of like a severely autistic person. In the book it is said that our collective consciousness is like this child, because we as a whole have never come in contact with another sentient species. I won't tell you what happens, and there's a lot of sub plot with the main character's husband and daughter, but I think a lot of you would really enjoy this book and gain interesting perspectives from it. I think I need to buy myself this book, sounds just like my kind of book

I bought another book *facepalm* I wonder why I have no money to go out and socialise I read a couple of things from this book in the Philosophy class I used to take but after I left I always wanted to track it down. So I ordered it from the book shop but it has taken forever to come in. But it was well worth it.

Some really good books are the Malcolm Gladwell books like Blink, What the Dog Saw, The Tipping Point, and Outliers are good non-fiction sociology books that get your mind going. also, freakonomics and superfreakonomics are pretty good. Fantasy children's book types are the percy jackson series and the series i'm reading right now: pendragon.

I just read Looking for Alaska by -- I'm sure a good portion of you know this already -- John Green. I loved it =D
The greatest book I have ever read is Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas. God, that was such an amazing novel. I just got done reading it a couple weeks ago, but I'll probably read it again over the summer...and again later this year...
After these two school books I have to read (Invisible Man and Slaughterhouse Five) I'll pick up some of these books you all are mentioning. They all sound fantastic!

I would highly recommend the Vampirates series. it has 5 books in it and a short story. Those are the first two I would also highly recommend reading stephen kings dark tower series. Phenomanal. /6a00c2251f97228fdb00e398f5bd630005-500pi[/img] Jack Higgins Hell is too crowded blew my mind. So did the Sword of Shannara So did the Deltora Series www.scholastic.com/deltora/Also a series of unfortunate events has to be one of the best series i've ever read lol. I think it's like the first time i've practically fell in love with a book character i.e. violet. www.lemonysnicket.com/books.cfm

Right now I'm reading "The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To" by DC Pierson. I'm actually really enjoying it, but I'm still think about the last book I read: "First Contact; Or, It's Later Than You Think" by Evan Mandery. In the description, they describe him as following after Douglas Adams and Kurt Vonnegut, and it's true. This book made me laugh and want to cry and think and all kinds of stuff! I definitely recommend that book. Along with anything by Adams and Vonnegut.

I am currently reading "The Host" by Stephenie Meyer. So far it's decent, I'm not a big fan of any of her other books.
My absolute favorite author is Gregory Maguire. (He is most famous for writing "Wicked".) I have read several of his books, my favorite being "What the Dickens". Most of his books are darker versions of well-known stories, such as The Wizard of Oz, or Cinderella, or Snow White.
I also love "The Tale of Despereaux", which is probably considered to be a children's book, but I love it so much.
