If you have watched the movie 23 you know how the protagonist of that movie would see the number 23 everywhere, and couldn't get it out of his head. Well, in a way I've noticed something similar with the numbers 911. Its been going on for a few years now. I see the numbers everywhere. I'm not superstitious, so I don't think they bring me bad or good luck. Then again, there isn't a day that goes by without me noticing that series of numbers. From cars, to the gas station, to numbers on my student card. I suppose it could be that after my brain picked it up I became somewhat sensitive to the series of numbers, and that is why I notice it. Anyways, I'd like to know if anyone else has seen this phenomenon or if i'm just showing the first symptoms of Schizophrenia

^xD ... You may suffer from this . Meaning that at some point you started to notice the many 911 related things surrounding you, you thought this was someghing new and special, when, in fact, they were always there. It has happened to me with names, numbers, and words (for example: when I learn a new word or meaning of a word I start to hear that word everywhere)

When you are looking for something, you will find a lot of it. Your mind may be subconsciously looking for that series of numbers. You are just unaware. EDIT: Lyserg beat me to it.

There's something called reification, which means taking an abstract concept and treating it as though it's some intrinsic law in nature. Numbers, dates, etc., are all just concepts and constructs we created to label the physical world. "911" doesn't exist in nature, but rather is simply the way we chose to represent nine hundreds, 1 tens, and 1 ones in base 10. We use base 10 because we have 10 fingers. By treating "911" as having any meaning other than a MEASUREMENT, you're reifying--treating our abstract concept as if it were something real in nature.
To illustrate this, imagine if we had evolved without pinkies and instead only had 8 fingers, and thus counted in base 8. The number "911" would instead be represented as 1617--1 512s, 6 64s, 1 8s and 7 1s. Suddenly your meaning of "911" changes, even though it's the exact same quantity being represented.
That's why numerology is a pseudoscience comparable to astrology. It's complete quackery and the connections you're making mean nothing.

After watching that movie a friend of mine has been obsessed with the number 23.
Honestly I kind of wish my mind would subconciously do that. It'd give me something to do everyday??

I do the exact same thing just with the letters "XD" which is mainly because it is a smiley I saw on a numberplater once, and after that I just started recognicing it everywhere... though I have always read everything from numberplates to signs(road, shops, etc.) to menues, and ofcourse books. that might have something to do with eachother?

The type of phenomena you are experiencing is like a game. This happens to many people, no worries.
There are two things you might be going through, or possibly both of them. 1. As said, when you think of something a lot (and/or look for it), you become hyper-sensitive to stuff relating to that. Anything related to it, and you can find connections.
2. When you try to avoid something (or not think of it) you become hyper sensitive to it, and anything related to it causes you to remember it.
An example, would be The Game. You might have noticed the word game up there, which I put to a) make a point and b) make everyone lose The Game.

Our brains are made to recognize stuff, in spots we try to recognize face and things we know (same for clouds);
I believe this has to something to do with the stimulus filtering (correct term?); basically I mean that our brain has just lots and lots of information to process and it separetes the important form the non-important stuff (important stuff goes through and gets a reacton, non-important is just left untouched)
I guess after you learn a new word or think that the number 23 you brain figures this information could be useful and starts to bring your attention whenever there's something in our environment that has something to do with it.
[did that made sense?]

Ask any mathematician (esp. physicists), and they'll tell you that there are certain numbers that recur everywhere in the known universe, over and over again.

I have noticed 911 a lot, on my clock and such. I am also in a robotics league that has team numbers, and I notice numbers like 1322 (our team number) a lot more than I used to. I am learning french too and when I see a word that resembles a word I just learned, I notice it even if I have used the word hundreds of times before. If something (a number, a shape, a word) comes up once, if you think it is important, or if you see it enough, you will notice it more than you used to because your brain subconsciously connects it with an earlier experience.

Haha, this is a coincidence, but Dan talked about 911 in his last "24 hours without technology video". He also put that clip in his most recent "doodlebug", as you can see here:
