I'd want to be trusted. I don't care if the people who follow me love me or hate me, but if they are able to trust me then it means I am doing something right as a leader (although I'd be glad if they loved me ;D ).
On a side note, I wouldn't like to be feared, as fear leads to anger and opposition as someone said above.

You say you don't care if people love you or hate you, yet you say you'd rather be loved and wouldn't like to be feared... Yes, trust is definitely a very important aspect between a leader and his/her subjects. Nothing can go very far without trust, as it is even one of the most important values in almost any situation (friendships, school, work, etc.).

The Office: I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.

Exactly, and that is why you see so many people protesting and rebelling against them.

Sadly, very few prove trustworthy. The rest of the damage is done by extremist commentary from (a) the other political party, (b) over-biased media, (c) 3rd party organizations (such as rights groups, religions, and so forth).

I don't know how it is in other countries, but here in America our system of government has become rather broken. The Republicans seem to almost always get their way, regardless of which party holds the majority in the House.

Nah, that's not true, they're just noisier. And remember the Dems also used filibuster in the Republican government. Trust me, I think the GOP are too extreme right to even take seriously, but let's face facts: the dems passed health care. CLEARLY the republicans are not getting their way if that size of a bill that had the lines that vastly split made it through.

All the same, they came very close to not letting it pass. They also had somethings adjusted in it. Filibusters... I honestly don't see the points of those things. Why do we even have to have political parties anyway? What's wrong with everyone just being independent?

well I think everyone who ever heard about Belgium heard that it's government is failing really really hard and yeah, it is XD The problem is that people who say what they mean don't get votes from enough people, so everyone starts lying and nothing ever gets done..

What do you think - is it better for a leader to be loved or feared by his/her subjects? Personally, I would rather be loved. Because if you are loved, then the subjects will be more willing to do what you want, and they would even stick up for you and do things for you that you may have not even asked for. They'll follow you with a sense of pride, and that would make for a much more powerful "army" than one who fears its leader. Is this even a debate? Historically speaking every leader who has ever been feared has eventually been killed and overthrown. Or the people just up and leave to get away from their leaders and start new governments they think will work better but seem to end up making the same mistakes all over again.
