So I've been trying to get a job (any job) since December with no luck. I had an interview at a grocery store and a phone interview with Teach for America (both denied me later). I've applied to every retail store you can think of. I thought that since I have a bachelor's degree (mathematics, btw) that I'd easily get something stupid like that to hold me off until I could get a full-time salaried job. For some weird reason, though, that hasn't happened. AND I'M STARTING TO LOSE IT. Do any of you work (or know someone who works) somewhere with openings, either listed or unlisted? It doesn't need to be directly related to math. If the position simply requires attention to detail, leadership, team work, logic, problem solving, or anything of that sort, I have experience to back that up. The thing is, I don't have JOB experience. Only SCHOOL experience. And, trust me, I've been on Monster and CareerBuilder like every day (as well as CraigsList). It's slim pickings. For reference, here's (pretty much) everywhere I've applied for at least one position so far: - Google
- IBM
- uStream
- YouTube
- ITT Technical Institute
- Teach for America
- Vimeo
- Carnegie Mellon University
- Borough of Manhattan Community College
- Carnegie Hall
- Hostos Community College
- Mashable
- National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts
- Queens College
- Tribeca Film Institute
- WNYC Radio
- Best Buy
- Target
- Wal-Mart
- Weis Markets
- Gamestop
- K-Mart
- Borders
- Giant
- Sears
- Staples
- Some nonprofit company near me
- As a projectionist at some theater near me
I feel like I'd rather be homeless than work in food service again, but I don't know. Anyway, if anyone can help or if anyone has suggestions, please let me know. Thanks.

Funny you'd mention this since I had two interviews today, I am what you'd call quite over-qualified for the average 17 year old and I've found that when you mention academic achievements to what I call "low" jobs such as catering (water, grocery shop) you are less likely to get chosen and it is better to act as if you are the average stupid guy who NEEDS money. with that said today I didnt mention any of my extra qualifications and I downgraded to what an average 17 year old would have and I did very well. I wish you the best of luck, since I am not a US citizen i can't really suggest anything.

I have a friend who has an MD and decided, after she graduated, she didn't want to be a doctor. She had a hell of a time trying to find ANY job. No one would hire her because she was over qualified.

No one would hire her because she was over qualified. Wtf? Is there any logic behind this?

Usually employers don't want to hire someone who is overqualified because they believe the person will leave as soon as they get a better job. With higher qualification comes higher chances of that happening

No one would hire her because she was over qualified. Wtf? Is there any logic behind this? basically if you are overqualified people will suspect you are just 'skimming' jobs. As in looking for a small part-time job which will get you X amount of money after which you will quit. (leaving them without a person for a job) They want to employ someone who needs money and will keep the job for as long as possible, as well as possible.

I feel your pain, bro. I applied for 18 positions in march, and I've only had one interview.. Sucks, lol. Good thing I'm joining the Navy in the fall! They'll take anyone who's healthy, hehe.

Yeah, but how is that supposed to help me and Rob? No offense... Are neither of you healthy? XD I think it was a fair suggestion. It's a fine suggestion, but I'm not physically fit enough for it. AND I absolutely do not wish to join the military. Especially in war time.

Well, I'm joining the Navy as a musician. They don't send Navy musicians to war can't say the same for the marines/army, though. How 'bout the Air Force? I'm not just trying to suggest joining the military willy nilly, though. It's a big decision to think about. I'm just saying, it IS an option.

Apply for Cha-cha. It sounds like a call girl service... but, it's not. It's a service where people can text any question to the number 242-242 and they will get an answer within 15 seconds. You can apply for a job as a question answerer. All you need is a good interwebz and Firefox. EDIT: I just did some research. Czech these out: becomeaguide.chacha.com/guide-roles/It turns out that the pay is low, but hours are flexible. Like, really flexible. It's all done through the computer, too.

Where wil he get the supplies? THe place to start a business? THe Money? If he gets a loan, and his business fails what will he do then? I always wanted to start my very own Reptile Shop, where i breed and sell geckos and reptile things... Or a plant nursery, or both! BUT there is one bad thing, I have no money, and in NY, I am likely to fail if i do open a shop. So, I cannot just go out and start a business. Like Rob, I need a job! A real job. Then I can chase my dreams

Why don't you start breeding lizards and selling them? If you're really passionate about it, you'll do all it takes to make it work. Then from there you can expand. You could literally start a business from pocket money.
