It's a community with a goal (what will be our noble cause). Really, I believe it is a project.
The point is that deadlines are not necessary for projects. I'd much rather have a more drawn out but effective project than one that is rushed and average.

My book club doesn't have a deadline. Each specific book will have a start and end date, but the book club itself will be long lived...

..I'm not saying projects have a deadline, but projects need deadlines. If you, with the book club, said, just read it, and when everybody's done, we'll discuss it, it wouldn't advance at all.

I literally can't see a situation that won't benefit from one. The Newsletter didn't meet its first deadline, and ... from how I understand it (which probably isn't correctly), not meeting this deadline discouraged at least a few people working on the project from continuing. They just wanted to give up. Example'd Now imagine a newsletter without deadlines. Imagine I said to you: "I'm gonna make a newsletter. I want articles, and someone to design these articles." Your instant instinctive response would be "Sure, when do you want it done by?" Knowing how long you have to do something helps you evenly distribute your time. I seriously doubt the newsletter would have ever came out if there had been no deadline. See... people are perfectionists. The trouble with perfectionists, is that nothing is ever perfect. They will make change after change, noticing things they didn't before ALL THE TIME. Things can always be improved, but is it better to have a perfect project that never gets done, or a good project that's done?

Woah, I wasn't trying to turn this into a debate. I don't think there is one to be had.
I just personally don't like the idea of deadlines. I see their advantages, but I also see their disadvantages... I can see how they'd help some people, but they typically only cause me trouble. So, hey, whatevz.

Dan didn't put a deadine on the noble cause... You can't possibly put a deadline on a noble cause.

Okay, well maybe I should rephrase that deadlines are essential to... deadlines are highly suggested? Sorry for turning it into a debate. Buutt, if you don't want a debate, don't disagree with anything ever. <3

plus we're all dying. That's a deadline...
Anyway I agree deadlines help, if needed they can be extended, but they need to be there. Not that it always magically works but it should in theory light a fire under us.
And is that really why some people lost interest in the newsletter? A deadline?
The impression I got was that the noble cause is supposed to take a lifetime. It's a life's work, yanno?

Thanks for the tips. I don't know why so many people fail at triad projects, but I really want to be one of the lucky few who pass!!

I think SPOTM is the greatest idea in the history of ideas and I will do everything in my power to help further whichever cause the community chooses to champion.
