Sure, I'll let an unaauthorized program to run stuff while I am away from my computer. Sure. Sure. No. This is the other reason WCG IS Authorized and safe. Some of the other projects aren't clear about safety so i'm not vouching for them, but as always, there are things you can do to make it safer. wcg.wikia.com/wiki/SecurityIs there anything I can do to further reduce BOINC's attack surface?Yes! Run BOINC with minimal permissions, as a service/daemon. In addition, you can set these advanced options in cc_config.xml: <disallow_attach> This option prevents users from attaching BOINC to additional BOINC projects. Make sure you attach to World Community Grid before setting this option! <dont_contact_ref_site> To determine if a physical network connection exists, the client occasionally contacts a highly-available web site (google.com). If this flag is set, this behaviour is suppressed. This flag also suppresses a periodic fetch of a project list from boinc.berkeley.edu. Note: BOINC 6.2.28 contacts ibm.com instead of google.com. <suppress_net_info> Prevent sending your private IP address and domain name to servers. Note: even if you don't set this option, your information is not visible to anyone except World Community Grid.

I'd totally do this if I had a faster computer. just an FYI the default settings make it so it doesn't run at all till your computer goes idle. it won't slow your system while your using it (since all it will be doing will be waiting to see when you go idle (which you can also set) if you get into and play with the options you can also have it skip that step and only run on a schedual (or do both! i.e. only run between these hours if idle ) no pressure though Even though i do want to see our team reach 30days/day

looks like you got in JUST as Nutritious Rice for the World was finishing up yeah my only badge is Silver for Clean Energy Project Phase2 and it looks like i'll be staying on this project almost exclusively till the end. I have one machine that can't do that project and i'm about 3 days from bronze in Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy - Phase 2, Help Conquer Cancer and FightAIDS@Home so wish me luck I'm going to try to up my Run time and see if i can break the 3 day wall. Any tips you can give?

btw, was looking through the forums there... As of Jan 16 of this year, peak performance was 393.5 TeraFLOPS with a 21 day mean of 385 TFLOPS for those that do not know, FLOPS is what supercomputers are measured in. According to www.top500.org for the month of June, the WCG would rank number 14 IN THE WORLD for peak performance in front of Forschungszentrum Juelich in Germany @ 308.28 TFLOPS and just behind Moscow State University - Research Computing Center in Russia @ 414.42 TFLOPS. The mean would put WCG in 13th place above Moscow State University @ 350.10 TFLOPS and falling just a bit short of DOE/NNSA/LLNL (I have no idea) in the USA @ 415.70 TFLOPS Currently, positions 8-12 are held by supercomputers in the 400-500 TFLOP range. I would love to see a collective group put the WCG in the top 10 range of supercomputers.

I don't have a linux machine so I'm locked out of Clean Energy.
The only thing I can do is give you my computer specs and my setup.
2.83 quad core Intel processor 8 gigs of ram 64 GB SSD
open your world community grid. go to advanced view go to Advanced Menu and select Preferences Under processor usage I have... "Only after computer has been idle for" 3.00 minutes Switch between applications between every 120 minutes On multiprocessor system, use at most 100% of the processors (I found out this frees up cores also that it would not normally use) Use at most 90% of CPU time Under network usage Max upload and download rate 0.00 Connect about every .2 days additional work buffer .3 days Under disk and memory usage use at most 10 GB of disk space leave at least 3 GB disk space free Use at most 90% of total disk space (will never happen as the most I've seen used is 1G) Write to disk at most every 15 secs Use at most 75% of page file Memory usage Use at most 10% when computer is in use (it does sometimes finish when I come out of idle) Use at most 90% when idle (which I don't think it can use more than a gig which is like 12% of mine)
anyway, I haven't dug too deep into the techincal aspect of it, but that is currently my settings.

hey i was looking over the info @ top500 and.. are they really just talking about video cards? they were raving about the AMD Radeon HD 5970 Hemlock (being a 2 core version of 5870, and sold as "intentionally underclocked to conform to low energy requirements") but that's a video card... i'm only using my cpu cores.. seems I have more forum searching to do
Thanks for the heads up!

Video cards can be rated in FLOPs as well, but no, the top 500 supercomputers is talking about the processing power of the supercomputers. Make sure you are looking at the correct list www.top500.org/list/2010/06/100

Thanks! i'll head to that now. Also i stumbled on the personal goals of peopel tryign to hit the TFLOP on thier home machines and the WCG/700 ratings so I seem to be averaging a pitiful 6.6 GFLOPs LOL if only i could get my other 2 machines going. I might be able to actually feel like I'm making a difference on my own. But with your suggestions my average should come up a bit so time will tell i guess. So you don't overclock or anything on that machine to get that kind of return?
