private servers are free, and fun if you ignore the spams for donations and voting

I like it. I got to level 20 on the 5th day of my trial, only to find out trial chars can't get higher and can only carry 10G. .______. So, I'd like to hear how these private servers work. Because I've tried it, but it somehow doesn't work.. Help?

I can't understand why people seem to hate WoW. I think it's a great game when played right.

I don't hate it, but I do think it's far more time consuming than it's worth, especially after you get to 80. Add that to the cost ($180/year) and it's just not worth it. People get as much fun and replay value out of Starcraft, for example, and that's just a one-time payment, with individual games that can be tuned for length. There are just plain better choices.

I played WoW for like 2 years and then quit once Wrath came out, because I was sick of playing a gimped class (Hunter) and having Blizzard not even pretend to try to fix them at all.

Ok - I played since the original Beta - only quit last August and here is why.
I spent a lot of money and a lot of time playing WoW. It was really fun, in fact five of my closest friends I made while playing WoW. I also saw lots of drama, underwent lots of stress, and dealt with all of the issues of switching communities. I had 4 level 60's before the release of BC and was one of few guilds that saw Naxx on my realm (way in the olden days) I continued in BC to have 6 70's. After BC I ended up with 3 80s in wrath - and frankly: by then I was bored. I had seen EVERYTHING and completed all of the storyline set forth from the previous Warcraft games and was content. As far as I was concerned - I beat the game and was happy. It wasn't worth paying money to stick around and deal with drama and other useless shirt.
If you enjoy it - by all means enjoy it. But do realize that you are paying a fortune for a game that will get old, will have drama, will have nerfs, will have haters and trolls, will have spammers and annoying people, will have issues, and in the end - you'll have spent a fortune for a game that you're merely content with.

Yeah, that kinda sums it up. I never had to deal with a lot of drama myself, mind, because I never really wanted to get into raiding. I spent most of my time at 80 doing battlegrounds, and had a casual guild that got into the second WotLK raid for a while (The one in the far northeast, name escapes me. Has the frost giant dude in it.). But like Tyme said, it costs hundreds of dollars over time (two years at $360, plus the games are around $100 or so all together I think.) and it's just not worth it over time. Had 3 80's in Wrath, and a smattering of other characters all over the chart. It just gets old, and at that point you realize you wasted a lot of cash.
And I didn't play half as long as he apparently did. It was the .2 version number in BC when I started playing.

This applys with pretty much anything you. If you kick a ball everyday for 4 years, you are going to get bored kicking the same ball. At least you have a real reason for quitting

That's why I said when played right. And I don't really spend that much money. I usually pay for 3 or 4 months a year. Of course that doesn't let me get all the high end gear, but it makes the game pretty fun.

At least you have a real reason for quitting The difference is in the monthly cost. Any other game that you got 4 years out of (and I'll go back to Starcraft as an example which a lot of people played at least that long) cost you only once right at the start. And sports might be a bad comparing point. If we're talking, for example, football (soccer), people don't appear to generally get bored after a few years. Many play all their lives, either professionally or casually. But that's a whole other topic....

Ladder become a pain in the ass after the first 20 or 25 games. You'll start weeping at the thought of playing more ladder. Custom games aren't rewarding at all unless you're into high end clan play. Never been much of a Starcraft player, but I was into this Custom Game on WC3 called Island Defense. I was one of the top players in the best ID clan and it was great, but you didn't really get anything. WoW is great because it's rewarding. If you spend time playing, you evolve a lot.
