would it be possible to stay away (for the time being) from the like button as a form of rank? at least until people have used it a little more because imo the feature is being a little underused at the moment and should grow familiar with the feature... or at least make the buttom alot more obvious to the user.
(because i view a rank to be a key feature governed by a non key feature)

I think that having the most likes = most power to be a stupid thing. I mean, what if someone does something REALLY STUPID, and everyone goes likelikelike just to be a troll, and that is taken into considerations, like a rule saying "LOL YOU CAN ONLY POST 13 WORDS A DAY. " and because everyone likes all their posts, then suddenly the Pogotribe turns to the Pogo/b/.

I think that having the most likes = most power to be a stupid thing. That's not what was suggested. I believe they mean that liked posts would determine rank such as meteorite, meteor, star, planet, etc. But all of those people have the same "power." All members are equal except for the admins.

i think he means power as in influence and recognition... and he has a very good point.

tbh i think you should leave likes out of it, its not a fully realised system.... and say you post around and no body uses the option on your posts, are you supposed to feel bad about that?
If no one likes a post then that user would be discouraged as they would feel left out of the community. ( which is anti-new users, based on from what i've seen from this community people will for the most part, like peoples posts who they are familiar with)
Also i think this system would promote all sorts of bad things such as people being silly for no apparent reason just for the likes and potentially putting interesting discussion at risk of a "like whore" which im sure would be an awesome phenomenon if this were to be implemented.
I think its good to differentiate a FORUM from a YOUTUBE way of doing things.
Granted post count is not all important but its something nice to have and a way of showing that you've been in the community a while and post regularly and if you post regularly your most likely contributing. (also having the like button does not necessarily mean that your contributing, you could be trolling and people could be like "L0L d4tz funny?!?!!!111!222!!1! rick roll" *hits like button* )
People are not going to look at an average post and go "oh... thats worth liking" and start liking every single post that they've appreciated (its tedious)
I know that post count doesnt matter and i agree, but i find this alternative to be sort of ... premature

Ironically, I liked that post to show my agreement. People are not going to look at an average post and go "oh... thats worth liking" and start liking every single post that they've appreciated (its tedious) Anybody use stumbleupon? How often do you actually press the like/dislike button? I never do =\ And I havn't 'liked' a post on here yet except that ^ one and another random one just to see what happened. The like button is like communism: it's a great idea in theory, but in practice we'll just end up a target for angry war vets. Also, hehehe premature

I'm just not used to it yet. When I see a post I like, I don't remember the like button. That'll probably change.

Just for the record, when James said that in the POGOTOK, he didn't mean the admins liked/were in favor of/have talked about/were considering that suggestion. He just meant that it had been suggested somewhere on the forums.
While James did say he liked the suggestion, he was speaking for himself alone.
