I think there needs to be a system to make it clear exactly what is being rated. Mine would factor in artistic achievement (originality and musicianship), artistic statement, appeal to basic human sensibilities (does it sound pleasant? does it make you want to dance?), and relevance, but only with older stuff (has this influenced a lot of artists, especially artists who are better on the other levels and have in turn influenced more artists, themselves"). That's only if I take a song for what it is. Think about this. It's obviously terrible, but I don't think it was meant to be "good"...and tell me you didn't crack up at 1:30. That said: 4/10. Urgh. That dude is so annoying. Not funny. I'm making up my system as I go along. I'll convert it to x/10 at the end. Artistic Achievement: 8 * originality +4 - Nothing radical, but definitely an outlier in its time. * Musicianship +3 - Conservative playing, but done well and not overdone. * statement +0 - Impossible to decipher, probably just about a relationship. * relevance - Too early to say. Human Sensibilities: 7 * Pleasantness +5 - Great tone and timbre, always in key, pleasant melody. * Dance Bonus +2 - Not going to bring the funk, but not completely stoic. I'll give it a 7.5/10 It appeals to my taste a bit more than I'd imagine it appealing to everyone else, but few would consider it an unpleasant listening experience. Now someone rate this. It'll take a while to really get going (it builds with loop pedals):

I like your idea of having a system, but I'm going to save that for my "professional" reviews. For these quick, on-the-spot, first impression reviews, I'm not going to use a system like that.
5.5/10 - The music was nice but very boring throughout the whole thing.

Artistic Achievement: 1 * originality -5 - "All the Young Dudes" by Mott the Hoople, or even Pachelbel's Canon * Musicianship +2 - Conservative playing, nothing great or terrible. * statement +3 - We don't like violence. * relevance +1 - Green Day will be remembered for their earlier work. Not this. Listenability: 3 * Pleasantness + 2 - At least memorability. * Dance Bonus + 1 - Sway with a lighter, at best. 2/10 Time for an oldie:

Rating for Lullabye by The Cure
Artistic Achievement: 13 * originality +4 - Great single from the first record where the Cure really did something expanding further from the Joy Division/New Order sound. Really intriguing and captivating. * Musicianship +2 A lot of loops, a lot going on. * statement +3 - See German expressionism. * relevance +4 - They may not have originated many aspects of this type of sound (look to Cocteau Twins, Joy Division, Wire, Virgin Prunes, for earlier elements of it), but they had a much much larger reach. We're seeing the influence in today's bands.
Listenability: 3 * Pleasantness + 2 - Extremely memorable, but Smith's voice is out of key, and it's far from upbeat (though much to my liking, nonetheless. * Dance Bonus + 1 - Goths dance too...a little. You'll dance...in your mind...man....
So...umm...8/10?
My personal tastes give it a 10/10...but I'm trying to over-think it into rating it for a more general audience.

^ Ugh! That voice. Is that autotune?
I found the singing hideous. The lyrics were ambitious, but ultimately unimaginative and ineffective. The music itself had some merit. Not enough to redeem it my eyes, but somewhat. Though I felt like some styles were brought into the song for dramatic effect and weren't done very well. (eg: poignant piano).
4/10
PS: Fucking pissed I didn't get to rate 'Clap Hands'.
