But even the iPhone people would prefer a mobile version. Still too crammed.

But even the iPhone people would prefer a mobile version. Still too crammed. i was trying to check the moon from my cell phone and i came up with the idea of having a SPOTM mobile site... beacuse not everyone has an iPhone and not all phone support apps...^ that is the whole point of this thread. (also, not everyone has a cell phone with a web browser as good as Mobile Safari either)

I'm slowly developing the css, and although all of the style is a mess, it is starting to resemble a mobile version site. Here are some screenshot taken from Firefox with the size of an older generation iPhone: As you can see, I'll try and make the header always visible, and I removed some extra navigation options (all with css) as they are hard to include in the mobile version. The advantages of a stylesheet is that no modifications to the site will need to be made as all is done with CSS (which is incredibly hard with the HTML this site has) and that users don't need to be redirected to different places to see the mobile version. To do: - Make it look decent
- Make it work on the home page
- Check if it works in the forum listings and make it work if it doesn't
Update: I'm forcing myself to use the mobile stylesheet, even if in my PC, so I keep developing it from time to time. (I really need to improve it A LOT)

The handheld stylesheet is moving at full strength. This is how the forum listing is looking like: It is close to completion! Just missing some details. I think I might even call this theme Sexiness Mobile UPDATE: Here is the home page I'll just take care of a few details in here and there, and then I'll provide the stylesheet to the admins. I'd just like to know, which admin would like to receive the stylesheet?

Houston, we have a problem: Webkit display:table-cell Problem and Webkit Bug 38527. Due to my Firefox-only testing, I never got to see how it looked on Chrome/Safari/webkit until now (although I prepared the code for it). So, while this stylesheet might work on Opera Mini, it won't work on mobile safari, no matter what I (or anybody else) do. I'll try and think of a solution, tough... it will involve JavaScript tough.

I don't think you should really focus that much on Mobile Safari or even Opera Mini, as those browsers can handle the full site perfectly fine (I have tested both). Of course, if you want to, then you could do it, but I don't think that's something you should prioritize very highly. What you should focus on, however, is those browsers that cell-phones that are not exactly the newest ones have. The site currently looks terrible with it.

I don't know if I can do much for those browsers. My entire stylesheet relies on cryptically large selectors with advanced CSS 2 (sometimes 3) attributes (mostly display: something). Opera Mini and Mobile Firefox can most certainly handle those perfectly, and so should Mobile Safari (although it quite doesn't), but I don't know if there is any chance for a stylesheet which works on older mobile browsers.

Looking amazing! Personally, I think that it would be better without the always-visible header and toolbar, to save space (on an already cramped screen). But still, this will make the site easier to use for everyone with a cell phone! Could significantly increase SPOTM activity.

Unfortunately, with the current underlying system, it would be very hard to make a mobile version of this site.
The most reliable solution would be to change to a system which allowed for advanced templating, thus making it possible to serve different stylesheets to different devices. The dream option would be if ProBoards offered advanced templating for their service. Thus applying the above solution easily.
The midway dreamish alternative would be if ProBoards implemented something like RSS feeds and a posting API. That way we could create a custom platform in (perhaps) PHP which would grab the RSS entries and display them enhanced for mobile. For making comments or threads the posting API could be used with Javascript or PHP.
The current alternative only available for guru magician programmers would be to implement some cryptically long and unmaintainable regexp filter to grab the parts that matter from this site and display them in a mobile friendly way on another place.
Currently, only the last option is possible and is way out of what I am able to do.

Sorry Anthony, I don't think it will happen soon. If you all agree, I can perhaps send the stylesheet to the administrators so they can implement a Fennec (Mobile Firefox) and Opera Mobile only solution. Don't expect me to try and maintain it tough. The CSS is so cryptically large and unmaintainable that I wouldn't probably know how to solve a bug if one appeared (for you to see how it is cryptic and hardly manageable: when I was developing, I had to rewrite a third of the code just to avoid a bug).

You could use a site called Mowser. It's great for making sites mobile(for free).

BTW, SPOTM on an iPhone 4 runs beautifully. IDK about iPod Touch though. (Make it the full size image) This isn't a suggestion we shouldn't make it, however the iPhone's safari is quite capable of running it. We should for other mobile browsers, like the Ericcson's (I had that phone for a while.)

It "works" well but the UI isn't that well optimized for a mobile device. It's fine for looking at threads but replying or doing something that requires more work could be a lot tougher. We need a new skin.

Posting can be a bit slow if you want to move the typing cursor but all in all it's good. As mobile sites are generally less functional than full sites I guess we would keep the full site for iPhones, iPod touches and iPads.

i think we should move this over to "projects", and maybe Rob could plug this in the next TOK? if we EVER do find someone capable of making this go mobile, that would be awesome. it would really raise activity and maybe even interest in the tribe.
