This thread is for sharing performances, recitals, techniques, musicality, or even just talking about experiences with piano pieces that were helpful or troubling. Just generally a thread for pianists to chill and share ideas Just to start of on conversation, what is your favorite musical genre to play on piano? classical, jazz, bluegrass, pop, etc. Personally, i like classical music, but when it comes down to the music that i love, i will play non-religious gospel sounding music

I took lessons in 7th grade for two years and can still play and read music, but rarely do as drumming is the biggest part of my musically creative life right now.

Me. No lessons, gradually self-teaching.

i have to ask then, do you read sheet music, or just sound things out? Play by ear. I can't read sheet music and play piano. I don't have that coordination. Not to say I can't read music, I play trumpet as well.

I play pretty much anything. I've been playing for around 8 years now, and I'm going to be a piano major in college (I start in two weeks!!). Whenever I read sheet music it's usually classical or hymns, but nowadays I just love to play by ear. I'll have to make a video with my piano solo version of 'Poker Face' by Lady Gaga. Her songs are so fun to play as solos!

I've been playing piano for almost ten years now. Needless to say, I'm pretty serious about it.
I've tried to do this new thing recently that I call the 20 Minute Finger Workout. Athletes work out the muscles they need to use for their sports. So, I train the muscles that I need to use.
First, I work on the Hanon book of exercises for 10 minutes. Then, I open up to a random page in a Fakebook and play the song on that page. After playing that, I improvise on a 12 bar blues for the rest of the twenty minutes. It exercises my fingers, my brain, and my chord voicings.
I've found it to be very productive. I'm arranging a couple of things for piano, as well. I did NYSSMA (a day in which participants get judged based on a solo that they prepared) and scored a 99/100. That's a pretty big deal. I've also accompanied the school chorus on piano.
K that's all.

I hate it when parents "assign" their children to play the piano. By that, I mean when parents force their kids to take piano lessons when the kids don't want to. If a kid doesn't want to play, he shouldn't.

I used to get lessons. I never really enjoyed them and I really hated the recitals. I was actually pretty good, but I just never had the motivation. I'd rather play a fast paced instrument like drums or guitar. I was very good at playing by ear, however. I taught myself to play Hot Cross Buns at age 4, but that's not really saying much.

I like rock music over all other genres. Pop is alright, I really like playing songs by the band Rush.

I could just never really get into piano, it was never really too fun for me. I mean, I was good at it, but I never really liked it too much.
