Building a strong community? Connecting with people all around the world? Making the world a better place? Having fun? Taking on projects to accomplish all of the above?
Yeah!

Well, that's what we used to be about. Now I feel we are just another forum. We've stopped being productive. We've lost a lot of people over the last few months and I don't see anything happening to change any of this. And I think most people are fine with that.
Also don't forget the Noble Cause. If we ever decide on one that will be what we're about.

If you don't see anything happening about it: do something. Also: I'm pretty sure Rob is still planning on doing another Noble Quest sometime. (I'm not sure when.)

I think we're productive, but that could just be because I'm involved. Maybe you should get more involved, Gameboob.
We have lost a lot of people, but that doesn't bother me, to be honest. I like SPOTM a lot now. It's calmed down so much, and I very, very much prefer this calm to the constant drama, hate, and rumor-spreading that was going on before. We hadn't grown properly (see value #6, "Grow Strong") and I'm glad that the community has slowed down and, basically, is giving itself another chance. The only way I know how to fix a broken community is to make a new one. I think that's what we're doing. So yes, I am fine with that.

What am I missing? What stuff is there to be involved in?
And in making this new community I hope we don't make the same mistakes the previous community did. Because I don't think anything's happening to prevent that.

Rice and grains aren't what poor nations need. They need animal products. The Heifer project that Speedy proposed that didn't really take off would've been much better since it provides families and villages with goats.
But I'll acknowledge that it's proof there's life in this community, although it's a project I don't support.

this... this right here is what our community is about. us communicating about what we are who we want to be and slowly becoming something amazing. we must build our community by helping each other before we can help the world...

What am I missing? What stuff is there to be involved in? And in making this new community I hope we don't make the same mistakes the previous community did. Because I don't think anything's happening to prevent that. Personally, I'm an admin, so I'm constantly involved in improving the technical aspects and aesthetics of the forum. I'm also a mod, so I'm constantly involved in keeping the forum organized. I also participate in a few small projects (e.g. Free Rice and World Community Grid, as well as some more recent seasonal projects, the Halloween Costumes and SPOTM Anniversary ideas). I've also suggested a ton of project ideas over the past year and encouraged others to pursue their own ideas. That's been enough for me. It appears that you aren't satisfied with the fact that we're not saving African babies or appearing on CNN for changing the world. I'm sorry. If you want to make a change, gopher it. If you're not seeing any stuff to be involved in, make stuff you want to be involved it. Others may be fine with making a much less significant change or no change at all. There is nothing wrong with that. You are no better than them and they are no better than you. We're going to make mistakes. We're not perfect. We may even make the same mistakes. We may not. If you're worried about making the same mistakes, do some brainstorming and figure out how we might prevent that. It'd probably be best to start with yourself, if need be. It's not like I can tell you X, Y, and Z is being done to prevent any of that stuff. I don't control anyone in this community but myself, and the same applies for you. As long as you make sure you're doing what you want to do in this community and with this community, you're preventing it.

Please, take a deep breath, and tell yourself "this post isn't too long; I can read it." Personally, I'm an admin, so I'm constantly involved in improving the technical aspects and aesthetics of the forum. Yea, I know of all of those projects, and I took part in the ones I agreed with. I was hoping you would've mentioned something that I'd missed. Then it appears wrong. And I know it's hard to make your text convey the right emotions, but what you wrote sounds quite condescending. I'm not saying we need to be anything great, I just thought the members of this forum pretty much wanted the same thing, to help out, to do some charitable work, regardless of how insignificant. There would be no use in spending time on SPOTM trying to get a project going if there aren't enough people committed in the first place. It's demotivating and it's one of the reason a few core members have left. I want to make sure there are people around that have the same desire before I bother trying to start any projects. And I've taken part in trying to get people active and I'm trying as I write this. One way of adding the life back to the community projects is simply through letting people know this almost lifeless state we are in isn't sufficient. I mean it's actually caused a few core members to leave! But I know awareness isn't by itself enough to change much. So I've done some brainstorming. If people in this community are concerned at all with problems in the world, even the minor ones, then I think we need a project to fit that. Since we haven't decided on the Noble Cause because there aren't enough people to make the decision, then we could come up with an Intermediary Cause, to give us, including the people that complain a lot, something productive to do and, hopefully, to bring in more members to have a big enough community to finally come up with our Noble Cause. So how does that sound?

Yea, I know of all of those projects, and I took part in the ones I agreed with. I was hoping you would've mentioned something that I'd missed. Err... how am I supposed to know what you've seen and what you haven't? Your hopes may have been a little high there. xD Then it appears wrong. And I know it's hard to make your text convey the right emotions, but what you wrote sounds quite condescending. This line: "It appears that you aren't satisfied with the fact that we're not saving African babies or appearing on CNN for changing the world" was purposely sarcastic and condescending. If you're referring to anything else, or my post in general, it wasn't meant to be. I apologize if it came off that way. I'm not saying we need to be anything great, I just thought the members of this forum pretty much wanted the same thing, to help out, to do some charitable work, regardless of how insignificant. No, we do not all want the same thing. I'm not sure where you got that idea. People are here for many, many different reasons. I don't particularly want to do some "charitable work." I'm no where near opposed to doing it, but I have other focuses. There would be no use in spending time on SPOTM trying to get a project going if there aren't enough people committed in the first place. It's demotivating and it's one of the reason a few core members have left. I want to make sure there are people around that have the same desire before I bother trying to start any projects. My suggestion is don't take on anything you don't think you and the community can accomplish. You're here all the time. You're capable of assessing how many people are here and what they would be willing to do, even if it means directly asking. One way of adding the life back to the community projects is simply through letting people know this almost lifeless state we are in isn't sufficient. I mean it's actually caused a few core members to leave! But I know awareness isn't by itself enough to change much. So I've done some brainstorming. I don't think we're in an almost lifeless state. At all. Just because we don't have as many active members or take on as many projects doesn't mean we suck. At least, not in my opinion. I really don't care that core members left. That's nothing to dwell on. They wanted to move on, so they did. Most were dissatisfied with the community, and rightfully so. The community of SPOTM sucked. Hard core. I'm so glad we're out of that phase. I'm glad people left, even if some of them were pretty awesome. It's ushered in a new environment. Yeah, I just generally disagree with you. I've always thought these "omfg we're not doing anything why aren't we doing anything ok lets do something oh whoops we failed we're not doing something again why aren't we doing anything wtf" threads were ... fucking SHIRT. Excuse my French. <_< This thread makes me feel like that again. Can't we just go with the flow? If we want to do something, stop freaking talking about how we're not doing it, and just do already. We need to stop forcing SPOTM and the community into things. It put a maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaajor strain on us last time, and I don't really want it again. But that's just me.
