It depends.
If it has awesome music, I don't care much about the lyrics unless it's either 1. Christian music or 2. Some kind of pagan/crazy music (which happens to be a group that apparently everyone around here loves, called "Mago de Oz").
If it has awesome lyrics, it should at least have a decent beat and I'm ok with that.

Both...
It depends on the song. Personally, I like a good mix of both. Not every song has to have great lyrics or lyrics at all, and not every song has to have amazing music either. It's all dependant on the song.
For instance: "Suicide and Redemption" (by Metallica) is 12 minutes, 12 seconds long and doesn't have a single lyric, but it's still an awesome song.

Some kind of pagan/crazy music (which happens to be a group that apparently everyone around here loves, called "Mago de Oz"). Holy eff, there too? I hate those guys, but I say it around my friends and they would probably kill me... Also: lyrics... music is important too but there's nothing like the lyrics of a song. Unless of course the song has no lyrics... in that case I don't mind, if it's a good song I like it as well.

Holy eff, there too? I hate those guys, but I say it around my friends and they would probably kill me... THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!! I think people like their music because they use polysyllabics, which are too complicated for them to understand what they're singing. They have catchy, happy songs, and I'll give them that, but people don't seem to notice the things they're saying. "Masturbating your sight", "Come to the pagan party, where there's plenty to drink" or "Nake the Virgin". The worst part of all is that most people I know that sing that are Christians. Go figure. :/

Both are needing for a song.
You cannot have one without the other.

I say lyrics are more important, though both are important. Unless there are no lyrics, then obviously the music is most important.
If a song is really catchy but the lyrics are dumb (aka most rap music) then I'm not going to like it. But if the lyrics are great and the music totally sucks, I still won't like it. It's hard to pick, really.

If a song is really catchy but the lyrics are dumb (aka most rap music) I find that a little bit offensive. Granted, most popular rap is catchy and dumb, but artists like Aesop Rock, Busdriver, The Grouch, and others' (even Eminem half the time) lyrics are far from dumb. Quite intelligent actually. You know, not all rap is "bitches n' hoes". I don't think it's fair to say "most rap" when most rap is actually more underground, like the artists I mentioned (minus Eminem). I'm not saying the majority of rap isn't dumb, I'm just making the point that a decent amount of it isn't.

^Agreed. Also, Idk but I think it's easier to write lyrics first... though I think most artists make the music first... so it depends on the person I guess

I write lyrics and the music at the same time. Sometimes I'll find a few chords and I like the way they sound together, then I'll fit words to them and go from there to create the rest of the song, making lyrics and music together. Same goes for a phrase or something that I think would make good lyrics.
As far as rap music goes, I think my comment stands with a lot of popular music (including non-rap songs). Everything's about a boy or a girl or something dumb like that. There are always going to be exceptions, especially if you look at the "underground" artists, but there's a reason they're not popular: people like bullshit lyrics. =P

Lyrics are to tell the to story of the song, Music is to emphasize to story your telling.

people like bullshit lyrics. =P That's what I tell to my Jonas-Bros.-crazy-fan friend all the time... and to all the girls in general (with some exceptions, but still)... =/ stupid girls are stupid... just look at the bieber kid and his fans... how can anyone ever think that his music is good? Or Taylor swift... *pukes* Srsly, you hear one song of any of those guys and you've heard them all, because they all talk about the same stupid things... and yet they're now even more famous than... well... god! and with god I mean real musicians... so yeah... that sucks... And then you go all like: "-insert something about awesomeness here- The Beatles" and they go like: "and who are those again?" and you say: "YOU DON'T KNOW THE BEATLES?!?!" and they say: "sorry, I don't listen to the stupid music you listen to..." ... and then their parents complain about finding them murdered the next day...

Lyrics HAVE to be able to function by themselves as poetry without a melody. And music HAS to be able to function by itself without words.

I don't think you can say what lyrics or music HAVE to do. It's art, it's subjective. You can say what you prefer, but...yeah.

Lyrics and Music are not mutually inclusive. Both are equally important, and both need to be able to survive on their own.
You don't need both to be awesome.
Although - sometimes, it's not the case - sometimes the lyrics consist of being greater-than-or-equal-to 70% instances of the word "na" and yet, are still very good songs.

Interesting thing here is, for song writers, which do you write first? Lyrics or music? Some do it either way. I am a songwriter and I find that when I write the words I already have a melody to go with them in my head. Quite weird really. Finding chords for it is annoying.
