I surely hope that Dan has been present enough to see the numerous comments expressing dissatisfaction with D3P0 as it is at the moment. I completely agree with these people, but rather than being another person to moan about it, I have a complete plan for how Dan can make this project work, now that he's settled in a home.
Post videos seven days a week. You're letting us control your life. If you're awake and doing things seven days a week, let us see these things seven days a week, and do tasks seven days a week. If you do tasks and make videos three days a week, we're only controlling 3/7 of your life.
Only accept the highest rated tasks. Tasks are a community decision. If a task has 20 yes votes, then 20 people want it. Plenty of tasks have 20 votes. If you accept these, then it's down to four people, the decision engine admins, to control your life. Your community is controlling your life, and if voting is how a community consensus is reached, you must honor the votes entirely. Take two small tasks every day, a medium one however often you see fit(IE every two weeks or every month, but be consistent), and take a large task when one reaches 1000 yes votes, and eliminate the DE admins, and choosing tasks will be completely a community effort, like it's supposed to be.
Structure your D2PO type vlogs. You're having Wall Wednesdays and occasional Twitter Tuesdays, so make your vlogs structured too. Make initial ones on Mondays, and Re: Re: videos on Fridays. This worked exceptionally well before, and it should be brought back, otherwise, there's no discussion, but you saying "Here's a topic, have fun, hope something happens!" without any follow-up to keep the discussion going. Doing this will make vlogs more frequent, and make people more likely to reply.
if you don't show us, tell us about everything even slightly notable you do in your life, like eating out at a restaurant or going for a walk. If we are to control your life, we need to be there experiencing and seeing it with you. If we don't see the big picture, it's like playing a video game without looking at the screen or listening to the sounds. If you move the control stick left, you know your character moved left, but you don't know the implications of this, because you can't see the screen. Show us, even with just a second-long clip, every place you go, every activity you do, and every decision you make, so we can know what you do in your life, and therefore make better decisions as to what you should do.
Start doing medium and large tasks constantly. You've done a few large tasks, like going to Montana to write a song with Hank Green and going on your Road Trip, and these were absolutely high points of D3PO. But they are extremely infrequent(you haven't done any since the road trip). You've been doing few of these large tasks, and I don't think you've ever even defined what a medium task is. For us to actually be controlling your life, here's how medium and large tasks should work:
Medium tasks should be tasks that take any amount of time from a few days to a month or even more, as long as they are prominent in your videos. These are things like the Road Trips and visiting Hank Green. I understand that these can sometimes be expensive and require planning, so they should be being done about 1/3 of the time(modify this figure if you wish, but at least have a definitive figure).
Large tasks should be things that take a week to several months, like the Pogo Stick World Record and the DailyBooth Aging Animation, and your continuous tasks, like the DailyBooth animation. Since these are background things, and since planning can be considered a part of the task itself, you should be doing many of these constantly. You should have some notable ending to each, like showing us part of the World Record Attempt or showing us the completed Aging Animation.
Finally, and most importantly. Start setting up polls where we can vote on as many small aspects of your life as possible. We can't tell you what cereal to eat or what Rock Band song to play explicitly with the decision engine, but letting us decide that, even if it's from choices you give us, is still a big part of giving us control of your life. Set up a part of the Revision3 page where you can post polls from your phone or computer, and let us have a say in these things. Life is just as much about the small things you do, like eating cereal, as it is about the Road Trips you went on, so giving us a say in these will truly let us control your life.
I thought that you'd be the one person who could pull D3PO's idea off, and use a community to let us control your life. I've watched you do small Challenge Charlie-like tasks like making rubber band balls three days a week. I've watched you go on extremely infrequent trips, with large gaps in between. I've watched you procrastinate large tasks like making a propose a topic button and breaking the pogo sticking record. I've watched this all occur nonstop since August. I've nearly lost all hope in that. Don't let everyone down.
