Let's go through all of them.
Charmander: Well, in the 1st gen, the only fire type you could really hope for was a ponyta, and those weren't so common.
Squirtle: He's cool and all, but there's not much of a need for him. There are more water types to get, and you don't even really need water until the 7th gym. Plenty of time to catch and train a staryu
Bulbasaur: Do you know how many effing grass types there are? Just catch one!
Cyndaquil, Totodile and Chicorita: Really, they're all good, and it didn't matter much in the 2nd gen =P
Torchic: Now, the first gym in 3rd gen is rock, followed by fighting. Unless you level this Torchic into a Combuskan, it won't stand a chance.
Mudkip: Here's a good pokemon. Water, to beat the first gym, then water/ground later? This thing kicks ass! Plus, it has a great move pool as a Swampart.
Treeko: Seriously? This is probably one of the lamest of all the starters.
Chimchar: Once again, you'll have to level it into a Monferno for it to even have a chance at the first gym
Piplup: Do you realize how epic this pokemon is? It evolves into a water/steal. A water mother effing steal!
Turtwig: Now, he's pretty cool, because he evolves into grass/ground, but that's only in his highest form
That's about it =P

I'm actually playing through Fire Red right now (3rd generation, for GB advance on emulator) and its so much fun. Just finished Leaf Green (remake of the original blue) I get an urge to play pokemon every couple years, and I still love it. I just reached victory road and will challenge the Elite 4 soon. In case you guys were wondering, (I know you are, don't deny it! ) my team this time around consists of - Lanturn (electric/water) - Blaziken (fire/fighting) - Medicham (fighting/psychic) - Gardevoir (psychic) - Flygon (ground/dragon) - Walrein (water/Ice) I tried to use ones I hadn't used before, and went with weird types. I really like this team, I think it'll work well. Wait, confused : None of those are in that game - trades? or did you mean Ruby?

Honestly, chimchar, piplup, and mudkip are the best for actual gameplay because they're the only starters that make it into the OU tier. However, torchic, treecko, and turtwig all make it into the UU tier and are also viable for gameplay. Any other choice is based purely on personal preference and not in-game statistics. I voted for Chikorita just cause I like it best from the show but I use torterra empoleon and infernape :\

I actually like Torchic best, just for it's evolve stages having both fire and fighting type moves. Just realise how much you get instant kill on.
Also, as we're speaking team; Kingdra (Water/dragon, only 1 weakness, beat that.) Breloom (Epic attack, plus grass/fight. Kick first, steal hp later) Skarmory (Well, evil strat, spikes, roar.) Shuckle (seriously, that thing has a gazilion defense) Starmie (recover, pshycic, thunder, and some water/ice thing = win.) And, last, and prolly least, Tyranitar. (Power/awesome.)

Out of just the starters: Cyndaquil. I love its final form. My favorite Pokémon are, in no particular order: Suicune, Flygon, Buizel, Umbreon, Lucario, Typhlosion. I usually have those as my ingame team in the 4th generation. I have access to an AR, so if they can't be caught I just put 'em in manually (PokéSav for the win). In previous generations I usually went with Scyther and Jolteon over Buizel and Lucario while keeping the rest. I do occasionally mix it up for some variety, but somehow I always end up back at my favorite team.

... Breloom (Epic attack, plus grass/fight. Kick first, steal hp later) ... I actually started out raising a breloom, intending to use the tactic known as "sporepunching". Basically the way it works is since spore is a 100% accuracy sleep move(!), it can be used in combination with focus punch, which need a turn where you don't get hit to charge up. The problem I ran into is that I realized too late that shroomish learns spore at 54 and breloom doesn't learn it at all, meaning if you want it, you have to HOLD shroomish's evolution all the way until level 54. ;_; So much for that idea. >.>So I just raised my meditite instead of catching a new shroomish and raising it alllll the way to level 55 again.

First off, too lazy to quote here.
This is what made me lose interest in pokemon. All these tries and hidden values and all that crap? What happened to just picking the damn pokemon, and fighting the gym leaders with your life. No move pool bull crap. Just get a big ass mother effer like Charizard or Groudon and beat the Elite Four till they cry... was that too much? =P
