As you know many websites are blocked in many countries. Let's take Youtube as an example as I often forget my mom (in Turkey) can't watch it and I try to send her adorable videos of kittens. Now in Turkey if you can work a proxy you can watch youtube online. However, this is very much illegal and very much your responsibility if you get caught and very much not something my Mom or most people can figure out or want to do. Also if the search engines are censored, you can't even find a proxy list. There's a few more countries with this problem though it's hard to get a full list because all the articles on Google seem to be 3 years old or referencing 3 year old research. Anyone actually know what countries ban Youtube? I only know of China and Turkey, because I've talked to people there and they've told me they can't get on Youtube. We all have the ability to download youtube videos and send them to other people. Do you see what I'm saying here? The last thing I want is to get this forum banned. Could there theoretically be a way to set up a system for peer trading without basing it on a website that could simply be firewalled? For example through chain mail. Would this endanger the people who read the e-mail? Surely not as it's not their fault they got it. Does something like this already exist? Also Windows users don't usually open attachments, often not even from friends, we can't limit this to Mac and Linux and others when most people still use Windows. We also wouldn't want to get the whole internet banned or emails banned or give anyone an excuse to do surveillance on private email accounts or intercept emails. (Are they doing that already?) Another idea would be to have two websites, one which always has a date which changes every day (Example April 16th) and the other which has a link (www.holycowthisisawesome.com or any website owned by someone who supports the idea) which changes every day so on April 3ed you log on, you see that on April 16th www.anotherwebsitethatsupportsthecause.com will have a video available for download to you, the video and site will change every day. So long as that pace of information never got into the hands of the censors and was only spread from one person to another who believed in freedom of information then it would work, though it would be slow. Maybe this is too complicated, or maybe it's not complicated enough. Let's brainstorm! Someone on TED said that in some places the internet is so controlled that it's actually more of an instrument of control itself and certainly not the liberating and free thing we associate it with being. Is there anything we can do to fix this? Ideas? More information on this?

Or they could abide by the rules set out by the country and not go on forbidden sites?

So we're all okay with censorship abroad then?

Or they could abide by the rules set out by the country and not go on forbidden sites? You decide what is wrong for you, not your government. Your government decided what's wrong with the education, environment, technology, operation etc. I find your comment very ironic since you're posting from a country which does not have such censorship in play. Very good topic rabbitwho, though I don't think I have a viable solution for it just yet.

I understand how that would come across as, however the SPOTM.com doing illegal activities to show other people videos from "the outside world" is not a risk we should take. However working to perswade the goverment otherwise is a suitable way to go around things.

People are doing nothing illegal, if as stated in the first post - they watch videos. But either way I find what you are saying very silly, just because a government says it is Illegal, it doesn't mean it is wrong and should not happen. That would make a lot of what is discussed in the debate section obsolete.

How would you... a) Choose the videos b) Let people in restricted countrys know about it c) Cover any language problems? Its a nice idea and would reduce world suck... but is not phesiable

There are already organisations which are aimed at net neutrality... which is in fact a big thing.

Don't want to get south pole of the moon banned in those countries though, that's my only concern. Some kind of development of the chain mail idea could mean that we can do this without breaking any laws in either country. I think there is a way of doing this if we put our minds together. Think impossibly big, a couple of million little tweets no more than 140 characters long have already had a huge impact on the world, even BBC news learned about the tSunami from twitter. Anything is possible.

My darling! you're breaking the rules! Think impossibly big! I already know the obstacles, I need people to think of solutions. People from the countries themselves can tell us what videos they want. We are lucky, English is a Lingua Franca, and nothing is unfeasible.

Yes, think "impossibly big" but not to the extent where what you want to do is actually impossible.
I would help out, but first as you said you have those obsticales... and unfortunatly those obstacals are HUGE!

I would help out, but first as you said you have those obsticales... and unfortunatly those obstacals are HUGE! No they're not, if you can't say anything positive and helpful why drag me down? Maybe I'll fail, but I'm gonna try. And so far you haven't named an obstacle I can't get around. Don't try to. Anyway for anyone who wants to help rather than hinder, here is a thread in another forum about getting youtube working in China: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1439485&

I'm not trying to "drag you down" and I really hope you don't see what i'm saying as a hinderance... I'm just presenting you with the facts that it will be differcult.
Anyway, if you need anyone to help I will be one of the first in the line to make the World Suck go down

That's awesome! Will be happy to have you aboard when I have a boat.
AHHHHHHHHH I just had another idea! (brainstorm brainstorm)
What about a list, just a simple list of email addresses of people who want to receive videos. it would need to be really really really really really long. the more impractical it is for us the more impractical it is for the people trying to monitor it.
then volunteers here (we'd need hundreds and hundreds of email addresses between all of us) send out a video to each person on that list once (just once!) from that email address.
That way, oh no! They had no way of knowing what was going to be in the email when they clicked on it! They don't know why they keep getting these e-mails! they deleted them immediately as good citizens.
What videos? We'll just ask them. There are plenty of people from these countries living abroad who have freedom of information and might be interested in getting stuff home. Plus i'm sure there are lots of human rights organizations that have content they'd like to get out to the people
(I think it would be a good idea, if once we had a plan, we contacted these people whose job it is, because they could tell us if it were safe for the email receivers or not)
just an idea, brainstorm! We can take bits out of loads of ideas! Brainstorm! come on!

Now that is a much better suggestion There are plenty of bulk mailers out there that can mail LOADS of emails (1000 Per Min) from all different addresses... However these are not free, but a small donation from a few people could cover it until advertising/revenew takes its role and manages to earn a decent revenew -Sean

that would be a cool project, but it's not in my field of talents, so I won't be helping out with it. I wish you success though!

I got some interest in this from someone who was trying to view videos in china before, but I didn't develop the idea enough so no one here took it on and I kind of gave up because I can't do it by myself. It seems I need to have a very specific plan in order to get people on board, and i can't come up with a plan without other people on board!
Also I should note that if we did end up going the bulk mailer route it would in no way generate any funds because that would be financially profiting from other peoples misfortune.

As Tyrope has said it is not necesary to buy stuff since we can code ourselves infact the only thing we need is the persons we need to send to, and perhaps some hardware (a server to send it)
