I'm a philosophy major and think philosophy is a precious precious thing. I can tell after having been here less then a day an appreciation for Science is here, which is wonderful! perhaps in some particular cases it's gone beyond it's place of well suited awe and moved into "no I'll reject every idea and call you stupid" territory. but all the same this reverence for science is great!
Philosophy doesn't seem to have the same amount of love so I'd like to do something for the tribe in relation to philosophy. any ideas?

I haven't read enough philosophy books to help... Sorry.
The closest I got to philosophy was in the book Ishmael!

Hee hee I thought ideas were your major! You could compile a philosophy for dummies thread with links to philosophy 101 topics and writers for us uninitiated and we could read them and get back to you. I've always wanted someone to explain to me the definition of a "valid" argument and give me some concrete examples. I don't mean the dictionary explanation I mean this business: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Validity

I'm sure you'll find something to apply your philosophy major to here on the forums, but I'd be happy to hold a philosophical debate with you any time should you grow bored

well technically philosophy is "love of knowledge" if you want to breakdown the word anywho. it really depends on the person some people have a "I'm right your wrong" mentality and will just call your arguments invalid, sometimes it's just a difference of opinion, sometimes it's factual versus intuitive truths (my words, as in a purely "logic" based worldview.verses personal experience/ metaphysics) I think any argument that reaches a logical conclusion is valid. and I think a lot of our aims should be about breaking down all the barriers to entry, any allow a more free exchange of ideas. for instance. I Believe in evolution and the big bang. wonderful theories. they seem credible. all the evidence points to them, unless future knowledge contradict them, they are safe. I'm also an occultist someone who uses "hidden knowledge" (occult means "hidden") I don't think my occultism is bad or wrong or silly. I think it has a lot to offer. but it's just the not same kind of truths you get from science.

Im pretty sure a valid argument is one whose conclusion directly follows via logical patterns to the conclusion.
For example:
If x then y If y then z x
therefore , y and z
that's a very very simple example but very clearly exemplifies valid.
it should be noted that a valid argument may have false premises and false conclusions

Once it gets past the point where it's really easy then it's immediately really complicated. Cool, I feel the same way, but that's a sort of dictionary definition/opinion, I was wondering about the actual formula and reasoning approach.

I had a philosophy class last semester, and I found it very very very interesting and would love to talk about it, but sadly I only barely passed that class (10/20). I know the basics and most of the Greek philosophy as well as some of the Renaissance, but anything 18th century and more recent is a blur to me

I had actually started one thing like that in here. The project is a little stalled right now, but I'll try to bring it back to shape soon and I am open for help.

I saw that old thread, I thought it was a great idea. If you decide to start it up again, I'd be willing to help. I did my B.A. in religious studies and philosophy, which I just finished a couple years ago, so its still somewhat fresh. I have a particular interest in logic and epistemology, so I might be willing to write intro-type articles based on those topics.

I like these ideas and this is a great way to start sharing the love of philosophy. I also think we should rather actively involve ourselves in the debate section =Uo.oU=

How about a youtube channel? Everyone sends in a philosophical statement, for example:
"Life is worth living"
Then they say how much they agree with it, and people discuss it in the comments. It could draw in a good community of people who like to think and we could plug the tribe! XD
