What does cool mean? Why is being "cool" so desirable? Why do people bother trying?

Being cool is like being like some of my friends that I look up to: compassionate, caring and confident.

I think "cool" in relation to people means someone that's popular, looked up to, etc. I think it's overrated. I'm a nerd. I don't fit in. I like it that way. "I'd rather be dead than cool" -Kurt Cobain

I think that a definition of cool depends on how you personally view things. I mean, let's just say I have a best friend with every rare Pokemon card ever made. I would think that was really cool. One of the "popular" girls in my grade, however, would not. And I think everybody wants to be "cool" (or, rather, have lots of friends and be well-liked by everybody) is because nobody likes being rejected or hated by society. I, personally, could care less about being "popular" or "cool".

It's a funny thing because it can be the perfect opposites of a spectrum: A socially elitist term; Something to strive to achieve in order to gain the acceptance of others OR the quality of being real, and void of social conformity status.

i think being cool is to be looked up upon by people, yet frowned upon by scociety or authority(i might be thinking more of a 'punk' cool than 'normal' cool.
