straemer, I'm only going to say this once, but I can assure you that 99% of the people who were taught sex education and about abstinence were not told that abstinence is NEVER having sex.
Someone back me up on this.

Here's what Mirriam-Webster has to say on the word:
abstinence 1 : voluntary forbearance especially from indulgence of an appetite or craving or from eating some foods 2 a : habitual abstaining from intoxicating beverages b : abstention from sexual intercourse
abstention the act or practice of abstaining
abstain (abstaining) to refrain deliberately and often with an effort of self-denial from an action or practice
No mention of permanence anywhere.

Kind of ironic Dan picked this week to do something on Sex. Two middle schoolers got caught having sex in the bathrooms.

Not sure thats irony Ramblin... It would be ironic if Dan made a video about using protection and Danielle got pregnant the next week. Not saying that would happen or she is, although pogobaby would be cute xD

Most of what I see on here is the education of people via the school.
What I would like to see more, what I think Dan Brown's video is about, is everyone in a growing humans life taking charge to teach them about sex.
I went to the school seminars up until I was home schooled (9th grade) and hid under the bleachers or skipped them, because I was in the South and I didn't want the abstinence-only spiel shoved down my throat. The gist of it seemed to be: Wait until you get married, and they'll love you forever and respect that you waited for sex until you were with them.
The problem was that most of the people in my class seemed to want to get married just so they could have sex. Not because they loved someone. Not really.
Most of my sex education came from my parents and I became something of a preacher to my friends. I drove three friends to Planned Parenthood to get on the pill and for the bag o' goodies condoms that they give out. I explained fun things to do and also a safe way to do it. Most of my friends told me years later (now) that they would have probably had children early in life if it weren't for me.
And why? Because their parents were too afraid/strident against talking to their kids about sex. Some had religious reasons, but it meant that my friends, going through a normal cycle, had no one to turn to and would have probably made terrible mistakes.
Most of my friends became sexually active at 13, 14 or 15. For a long time I continued to give them advice, despite not being sexually active myself.
I didn't loose my virginity until I was sixteen and, five years later, I'm still with that same man. We're not married, but who knows what the future may bring? We're happy together without a ring and slip of paper that "binds" us.
I'm started to teach my little sister, now 15, about the desires she's feeling and how to safely exercise this with herself (masturbation is fun and healthy!) or someone that makes her feel good and safe. I like keeping it in the family because there are no pretenses, and my friends and sister know that I care for them, and I'm not just collecting a paycheck or filling a requirement (like most sex ed instructors).
It would be nice if we could all reach this level of open communication and truthfulness. I have personally seen it create sweeping, positive change in people's lives.
Well-sexed and healthy people are happy people.
Sorry for being so long-winded. :-)

True. I think one big factor is what parents think the answer to that question is.

No mention of a terminating-condition either... O well, it's just the way I was always taught, and it can be a bit ambiguous. Regardless of whether abstinence is meant to be until marriage, or if it means to go your entire life without sex, I still believe there is a major difference between chastity and abstinence, in that chastity involves morals as a cause, whereas abstinence just seems to be for the sake of being abstinent. So besides that, my original point still stands that sexual education should be based upon love, morality, and personal choice rather than some sort of extreme view either way.

WARNING: This is realllllllly long lol!
As far as the video "Re:Re: Sex" goes, I agree with Dan and all three of the video responses he showed. Adults need to take charge and tell their kids about sex and really inform them and not be embarrassed about it. Also I think it would be beneficial to have sex ed at schools as long as it was done right and they didn't try to force abstinence or any view for that matter. Just give them the facts and let them decide. I personally did not have sex ed at my school so I had to learn whatever other ways I could. I honestly don't understand why people are embarrassed by sex. Like Dan said it is a natural part of life and it is enjoyable! It's not some bad gross thing but people don't treat it nowadays the way it ought to be treated. It shouldn't be with just anyone or numerous numbers of people. It's special. Something to share with the one you truly love. I'm not saying it has to be super serious all the time, but it's not necessarily something people need to take lightly. Yes it is meant for procreation, but at the same time it can be recreation. Obviously, I mean that why people do it all the time! It's fun, it's enjoyable, it feels good; and it should! In my personal opinion, I'm not going to have sex if I'm not willing to face the chance of having a baby. Now that's not to say that I think that everyone should be that way. If you want to have sex by all means have sex, that is the individual's choice and no one can force them to do anything different. I am a virgin and I plan on staying that way until I'm married...but that's just ME. I don't expect everyone to have the same views as me and I wouldn't want them to. And just because one decides to practice abstinence that doesn't necessarily mean that they won't engage in any sexual activity at all. There are things to do that are pleasurable that don't require actual intercourse. Yes I know it's not the same, but that way you don't risk the chance of getting pregnant. Again yes I know there are contraceptives but, hey, SHIRT happens. After all, they aren't 100% effective.
ANYWAY I guess my overall point is that people need to be free to make their own decisions and not be criticized by the choice they make. Just be smart about it.

Yes it is meant for procreation, but at the same time it can be recreation. Why do so many people insist that sex is "meant" for procreation. Why can't we also say sex is "meant" to provide pleasure and companionship? Really we can ascribe any meaning we want to any human action. (We could go into the intent of nature or the gods or whatever, but let's leave that for another thread.) So, we can make our own meaning with sex, as with anything in life. Also, the constant reference to procreation in a discussion about sex seems to ignore that there are many ways to have sex, one one type of which would potentially result in pregnancy. I suppose we could discuss whether sex education should include these other types of sex. I think it should, if for no other reason than safety purposes. I certainly never heard of a dental dam until long after my schooling. As I mention in the video I made in response to Dan (watch my video here), I rarely even think about the procreative side of things when I think of sex; this is probably a byproduct of not being heterosexual. Instead I think much more about STDs and the like; something that was strangely absent from Dan's videos.

One of our closest relatives on the evolutionary chain, the Bonobos, have recreational sex and sex for procreation. In fact, when a tribe of Bonobos are threatened and scared, they will have sex with each other or rub each other genitalia to calm themselves down. The babies being raised in this tribe are exposed to it at a young age and--I know it may be kind of gross--participate in these sexploits from a very young age.
You will find many other examples in the animal kingdom of mammals, especially, having sex for fun. How do we know? Because they'll have sex even when they cannot mate, are too young, or too old.
Also, masturbation. Animals masturbate all. the. time.
