Anyway Im glad they're going into space again They have been back to space, tons of times, they are just trying to get deeper in space.

Well, this is actually for Obama's new space plan. He's going to increase NASA's buget by 6 billion, develop a new heavy-lift rocket, keep the orion capsule going (mainly as an escape vehicle for the space station , but it will later be adapted for deep space), turn LEO over to private companies (because we've pretty much got getting to and living in LEO down pat, and NASA should be leading the way into deep space), all of which I agree with, but we're not going back to moon in this new plan. Going back to the moon will give us the experience needed to go on to mars and beyond. But landing on an asteroid is much harder. Asteriods aren't as close, obvioulsly. Orbital manovering would be more complex. This has been planned for many years...not Obama, have you ever heard of mars 2020? Nope. Before there was the Constellation program, which was to have two rockets (Ares I and Ares V) the Orion capsule (which is still going to be built) and a lunar lander whose name I don't remeber.

I'm not sure you have the story right, I'm thinking they are going to one of the planets moons, trying to get closer to Mars, they wanted to get to mars by 2020.

You can have done something an infinite amount of times and the next time you do it it still counts as "again" Here's Burt Rutan talking about how the government is investing less and less money in space and going into space less and less

That is quite a good idea, though I believe that before any of this is done (or any of the things mentioned in this thread) there needs to be a break through in science as regards space travel.

According to a ted video about space tourism at the moment there's about a 10 - 15% mortality rate for people that go into space. Most of these people don't go very far out into space and don't go on trips that last very long. How likely do you think it is that people are going to come back after 15 years and hundreds of thousands of miles? It would be a death sentence. There are millions of things that can go wrong and not even a proper way of testing everything on earth. That's the thing is this isn't even SAVING earth. This is a 'test mission.' If the astronauts die than what the heck was the point of all that money gone to waste??? Also what if they change it's trajectory so that it 'is' aimed at earth. Theres too many things that could go wrong. heres your source, and I think i read it wrong the first time. It worded it crazy. It says that they could reach an asteroid 15 years from now as in they'd launch in 15 years. It says 200 days to get there and back. Still... www.stuff.co.nz/science/3593891/Obamas-asteroid-plan-could-save-the-earth

Don't you all realise this is just an excuse to build an outpost on a remote planet so the rich bastards can survive 2012?
OT: if you don't try, you will never succeed. I think it's irrelevant anyway. What's 6 billion compared to the money spent by the U.S. government on the wars in the Middle-East? Better to spend it on science than on war.

Well considering what is happening in 2012 if anything happens it would destroy the whole solar system which is stupid anyways.

I would embrace it, but we're already so much in debt we don't NEED more debt. Where's the money coming from anyway?

But yeah, I'm all for science and whatnot, and if it could possibly save the earth, then I'd say it's defiently worth doing.

Going back to the point of whether or not it's a waste of money...Well thank goodness billions of dollars haven't been wasted on futile efforts in the past, right? *COUGH* vietnam, war in the middle east, and car manufacturer bailouts *COUGH*

^ I agree with the fact that it's incredibly important, but wholeheartedly disagree with "That doesn't matter". In the society we live in, money is a huge issue. It does matter, especially with everything else the government is spending money on at this point.
I'm all for this project, but I also want to see where the money is coming from. It's more important than money, of course...but we need to be able to pay for it somehow.
