Yes, I would answer honestly, though I highly doubt that would ever happen. Remember you are not the only person in the world. This goes for both parts of your reply.

In the society we want, yes. In today's society, no. So many people need lies to get by because reality is too much. However, when (not if) we decrease world suck, this won't be the case. Then we can tell the truth all we want without hurting too many feelings. Or causing too many aneurysms. Yea I realize this is a bit far-fetch for today's world, it just seems like such a wonderful world... ;D

The invention of lying does provide some insight on this topic. As far as its movie qualities, it wasn't the best, but as far as the message regarding honesty and truth, I find that it offers an intriguing point of view.

What does this or your question have to do with anything? You're putting words into my mouth. All I said was that I'm a tell-it-like-it-is sort of person. I don't sugar-coat things. I never said anything about me making other people that way or that other people should be like me or whatever you're accusing me of saying even when I didn't.

Honesty is good, but it might cause problems, EXAMPLE: Your girlfriend asks you if she looks fat in an outfit, and if you must tell the truth, all hell may break loose.... I would respond with outfits don't make you look fat, cause its the truth. any guy that actualy wimps out in that situation is not a man.

Or causing too many aneurysms. they have to get used to it somehow. if you dont fight a problem it cant get better. that is unless your proposing that theres something we could fight against that if destroyed would be a stepping stone on their way to coming to terms with the truth.

However, there are circumstances when lying is necessary: if you are a soldier and you are captured, you could lie to your captors. If someone asks another person where a third is because they intend to do them harm, lying is appropriate. assuming the state you are at war with has bad intentions for the world, you can be honest with them in both situations and say your withholding information from them because you don't agree with their intentions. it's pretty simple. you haven't deciecved them in any way either.

I'm also a big believer that honesty is a good thing to have.
But I think we should never confuse honesty with being mean. You can be honest without being mean about it.
I think, if we just did that, the world would be so much better. People should be able to NICELY be honest, not always just tell the cold, hard truth, even though sometimes it's unavoidable. But, as much as possible, people should be honest. I think lying to someone is a total waste of time. Plus, you need a photographic memory to keep track of your lies. Don't you think it would just be easier to tell the truth?

I think it would be perfect if everyone was honest, but only if everyone was willing to accept criticism about themselves, which they are not. This would be in a perfect world. Unfortunately humans aren't perfect.

Looking at all these wonderful comments it seems that there is an overall agreement that the goal of honesty is to decrease world suck in the sense of eliminating broader and more "harmful" lies. However, it seems out issue is dealing with all those little white lies. In my opinion honesty is the best policy with a few exceptions like POW situatins where you're jeapordizing others in danger by telling the truth and such but even then you don't have to lie; you always have other options like telling a partial truth or just not saying anything... It just seems t come down to personal morals and ethics.
I've a question involving a certain scenario: Somene close to you is dying and there's no hope for them. They ask you a question along th lines of "how's your mother/father/friend doing". That person has actually died recently and your dying friend doesn't know that. If there is a garauntee that they will never find out (say they die in the next hour or no one tells them ever) would you tell them the truth or lie? Knowledge or ignorance? Harm or peace?
