I'm a big believer in the idea that honesty shouldn't even be a quality to be proud of but just a fact of life. I think that the world would be much more awesome if everyone was always honest about their intentions motivations and their overall actions. Yes the change would be a bit bumpy at first, but wouldn't everyone eventually gain from a world like that? So the discussion question is: Should everyone in the world always be honest? and explain why/why not?

Honesty is good, but it might cause problems,
EXAMPLE: Your girlfriend asks you if she looks fat in an outfit, and if you must tell the truth, all hell may break loose....

You need lies in this world, one way or the other!
I'm just saying that those little white lies are needed sometimes.
It's very obvious when you think about it

Honesty is good, but it might cause problems, EXAMPLE: Your girlfriend asks you if she looks fat in an outfit, and if you must tell the truth, all hell may break loose.... As I said before the transition from our type of society to the one such a task would create would be somewhat... bumpy... People are not used to being completely honest to one another. The problem is that small lies in relationships even one as insignificant the the one you mention usually takes part in the demise of the relationship. That being said, I'm not saying that everyone would just start going around being rude to one another, yelling their imperfections. One example of where I think honesty would be very beneficial is when someone is racist. If someone cannot lie they would have no choice but to express verbally those kind of emotions towards the people he/she is racists towards. Since racism is based on stereotypical and untrue characteristics of a certain race, it would be easier to rehabilitate, educate them or correct them of their misunderstandings. Which is a lot better than a racist person who does not says it publicly but their actions are obviously racist (I had a boss like that) Since everyone had defects all people would have to be understanding of the rest, and therefore aspire to help each other. P.S: @ MattGilb3rt: I only think it seems obvious because we haven't really considered the alternative.

In a perfect world, no quality would be a good one, because they would all be common.
In this world, honesty is practical in most cases, as lying usually leads to more lying.
However, there are circumstances when lying is necessary: if you are a soldier and you are captured, you could lie to your captors. If someone asks another person where a third is because they intend to do them harm, lying is appropriate.

but that's assuming that honesty wouldn't solve problems between nations... If agencies are transparent I doubt there would be the need for wars

darn it Ricky you stole my idea.
I totally agree with you, personally I believe that should be one of our tribe values, to always be completely honest.

Do you mean honesty between persons, or honesty between nations? Both have different pro's and con's which I'd like to address, but I don't wanna super post on a topic that we're not talking about.

People, but that would lead to nations. How can a nation lie to another when everyone in the world is honest

I highly doubt that lying to a spouse or a friend can be judged the same as a government that lies to its citizens.

No, but I'm not saying that only spouses or friends would be able to lie, but everyone... from the homeless guy down the street to the president or prime minister (depending on where you are)

Something I would note is that honesty is defined by both truthfulness and absence of lying. So in order for there to be honesty, there must be both truth and lies.
I don't tell lies, but I sometimes hide the truth, am I honest?

I don't tell lies, but I sometimes hide the truth, am I honest? No, you are just hiding the truth. It's just another form of lying. It's not usually as serious but it is still.

In the society we want, yes. In today's society, no. So many people need lies to get by because reality is too much. However, when (not if) we decrease world suck, this won't be the case. Then we can tell the truth all we want without hurting too many feelings. Or causing too many aneurysms.

I'm always honest. If you're hair looks terrible, I'll tell you. Your father has recently been arrested for raping your younger sister. I see you on the street and I casually ask you how's you dad going (I'm an acquaintance of yours). Would you answer honestly?
