my question for you is: what is the meaning of life for you guys? do you think our purpose is preset? or that our worth is dependent on our achievements?
are we here for some greater power's amusement? (like sims lol) or are we part of a bigger plan?
i will post my thoughts tomorrow when im not so tired and can actually string a sentance together but please leave me your thoughts
dont be affraid to leave one sentance answers as well hahaha it doesnt have to be super deep stuff =)
thanks in advance Tom

In response to this I will post one of my favorite aphorisms - though I don't know the author.
The meaning of life is simple. The search for it is long and grueling. Many a man and woman have wasted their entire lives searching for the answer. But I have found the answer, and it is better to have lived without it. For you can only truly live life, if you do not know why it is that you live.

I've heard it argued that the meaning of life is to reproduce, since we are after all just animals and we need to continue our species. Once you die, all that's left to show for your life is your offspring. BUT... I disagree. I don't think you can say that our purpose in life is to continue our species because when you're dead, that's all that's left. Eventually, humans will no longer exist. It's inevitable. So when that happens, our attempt at continuing our species will have been useless. So if it's not going to matter whether or not you reproduce once that time comes, I don't think it can be the purpose of life. That being said, I don't think our lives are totally pointless. I disagree with the statement that all that's left when you die is your children. Sure, your wealth and property will be gone, but you can leave behind other things: discoveries, medical breakthroughs, changing the world, helping people, etc. What you do can affect how everyone after you lives (think Thales of Miletus, Colombus, etc.). So I think the meaning of life is to leave an impact on the world.

Chelsea I kind of disagree. I think fundamentally the purpose of our lives if to reproduce and pass on the genetic code to the next generation. However, I do think we are fortunate to be intelligent as we are because we can make our lives satisfying to ourselves and not just be driven by primitive instincts and urges. In short, we can make the purpose of our life be what ever we want. I'm not sure how much sense this post made but I will probably come back and edit it when I'm not as tired.

I don't think we even need to leave anything behind. Life's purpose can be just life itself. Enjoy yourself.

NOOOOOO THE ANSWER TO LIFE IS NOT 42~!!!!! WHY ON EARTH DO PEOPLE MAKE THAT VERY VERY VERY VERY WRONG DISTINCTION>..... READ THE BOOK!
Edit: Sorry for the explosion - but every time someone asks the question behind the meaning of life, someone else answers with 42, and that's not what 42 in the book meant.

The question in the book that deep thought gave the answer 42 to, was: What is the ultimate answer to everything in the Universe? The answer deep thought gave was 42. It then posed the question, do you know what it is you really asked. That is what the giant super computer of the earth was commissioned to do, and it blew up and lost all of the work in finding the question.
So the answer to "what is the meaning of life?" is not 42. The answer to "what is the ultimate answer to everything in the universe?" is 42.
If someone applies the answer 42 to the question "what is the meaning of life?" then they should also answer, the question "what is your name?", "what is your quest?", and "what is your favorite color" with the same answer; 42.

the purpose of life is simply that life. To grow and to make the world better for the next generation. And to get the next generation to find the real answer.
(but those the purpose in life realy matter we should live our lives to the fullest have fun not everything needs to matter if it feels good do it)

o.k sorry ive been so long in posting my answer but firstly i must say If someone applies the answer 42 to the question "what is the meaning of life?" then they should also answer, the question "what is your name?", "what is your quest?", and "what is your favorite color" with the same answer; 42. monty python reference=epic win my view is there is no meaning to life. we're born, we live, we die. on a bad day id leave it at that, maybe even replace "we live" with "we suffer" but on a good day i tend to believe that our purpose is what ever we make it out to be. if you want meaning, give yourself a task to complete or to engage in until you die. cure cancer, discover the secrets of the universe, or do like myself and live for other people. i myself feel like i exist to try and bring happiness to my friends, family and other people who might need it. i believe this to be a good reason to live but i dont believe in an afterlife or anything like that so i just hope that after im gone (and im not sure why but i believe it will be long before everyone else) people will think that i mattered to them at least.
