I, for one, feel responsible for what Iran is now. Iran is just one of those little american "sins" going back to the cold war.

After following the mass protests against Iran's (rigged) election last year, it seems like the best thing the Western World can do is exactly what we are doing now. Engage diplomatically and leverage economic pressure to keep the regime in check on an international scale. The last thing we should consider doing is interfering with the country's internal politics. The impetus for revolution is there already in the growing number of dissenting Iranians who don't support the current government. I would go as far as to say civil war is inevitable and it's only a matter of time.

Unfair political system, unwise attempts at making nuclear weapons, stoning of homosexuals...not a great place.
A friend of mine is from Iran and occasionally goes back to visit family - I get the impression from him that it's really not a fantastic place to live.

Uh well, there's no doubt that Iran's government is the most religiously fanatic one there is right now. The system is built upon an extremely conservative interpretation of the Quran, and is sadly one of the sources to main reasons to the western general view of a muslim. Fanatics like the ones within the iranic government isn't going to change any time soon, they'd rather fight and die.

Fanatics like the ones within the iranic government isn't going to change any time soon, they'd rather fight and die. Pakistan, Indonesia, Israel, Kongo are all countries that are by far more religiously more fanatic than Iran. These are just the ones I got from the top of my head... I mean 5 years back, USA wouldve been on that list. GW Bush answered the Swedish Primeminister "Because god told me so" on the question why he started the war in Iraq! But there is no question that Iran is a troubled country, Though in terms of dangerousness to the "west", I think we are totally missing important countries like Indonesia (A free for all hidingspot for terrorists), Pakistan (They have nukes and support Al-Qaeda), Saudi Arabia (The monetary support of most middleeastern terroristgroups). Wow, I totally digress. Iran is a complex country, 50 Years ago, a BA from Teheran was something really prestigious. As someone said, it has alot to do with the pressure from west, and then the completly rasist/nationalist politics the west have had the last 100 years have led up to this point. Where the young hate the old, and the old have all the power. Eventually they either take over or become a part of the system themself, Depending on what the rest of the world will do.

iran in general? bad government, bad policies (stoning, attacking protester extremely harshly) crazy guy on top, but ive got nothing against iranians in general, they're just normal muslims, its who they're under and what the people they're under are doing that's a problem.

Overlooking The Doctor's factual oversights for the time being...
Sitting back and leaving the Iranians to fend for themselves is not the answer here. Sure, at this point sending in the SEALs is not our place, but we should take a slightly more active role in the oppression going on there.
