Which is the bigger event? Define what makes it bigger.
I say the world cup because it has a bigger following than a sport like track or something like that. I also think it's bigger because more people get passionate about it.

Honestly? In my opinion... Soccer=Religion Olympics=entertainment Both are important, but I would have to say the world cup is far more significant considering everyone around the world can relate to it. This is because soccer is a global sport oppose to a national one (hockey, baseball, (American) football and so forth...)

I beg to differ (with Picnic)! The olympics is a WAY bigger deal than the world cup. Maybe this is just because I'm an American and not that big of a soccer (or football, whichever) fan... but the Olympics encompasses a wide variety of sporting events and virtually every country in the world. Where as the world cup focuses on only ONE sport - and there are much fewer participants.

I think the olympics actually receive more views than the world cup of soccer but the world cup is more important to the people who love soccer than to anyone who tunes into the olympics.

Hey, I'm from the us and I still think that its the world cup.
Let me say this. The olyimpics is bigger to the world, but it's not very passionate to the majority. The world cup may appeal to soccer fans only, but to those fans, it's more passionate and followed. To people who care about the olyimpics, yes it's important, but not as much as the world cup is to soccer fans.

Olympics>World cup.
Soccer's like golf in my opinion...Fun to play, but boring to watch.

It depends largely on location. In Europe and South America (because those continents are the "best" - the only ones left in the semi-finals as of today) the World Cup is huge. And, because the World Cup is more "specialized", more people watch every single game. It would be almost impossible to watch every single Olympic event.
But the diversity of the Olympic events also is an advantage, because people can choose exactly what to watch and suit the schedule to their liking. A lot of these events also appeal more to female audiences than the World Cup does.
Therefore, in most of Europe, South America, and Africa (especially for males), the World Cup is bigger. In the rest of the world, I'd have to say the Olympics. Keep in mind, however, that both are great sporting events and the people who follow one are more likely to follow the other.

I'll have to say World Cup > Olympics.
Why you might ask? because I like soccer of course... I used to watch the games with my family when I was a kid, and now usually with friends. I used to play too, so I can relate, and to be honest, its just not the same with Olympics.

I think the point of the Olympics is just that every country has a couple of sports it's good at, and the inhabitants of that country will only watch that sport anyway - like in the Netherlands, people only ever watch ice skating, swimming and female hockey. Because we win at those sports. And then most people don't really care about the rest.
And I suppose I'm a little biased about this year's world cup, as the Netherlands is in the finals now, but usually you kind of keep track of it anyway - until your country is out xD - but it's not like the Olympics, where you don't have a clue what's happening in the rest of the sports.
So I'd say the World Cup is more mainstream, the Olympics is a bigger event in itself because of all the different disciplines.

I believe I heard somewhere that the world cup actually is the world's largest sporting event, even larger than the olympics. (EDIT: World Cup: 204 participating countries, Olympics: 82 participating countries, according to Wikipedia)
Also, I believe people get more passionate about soccer than about the olympics, especially in the countries where it's extremely popular (especially European countries, South-American countries and South-Africa).

Both are tiny in comparison to the *vuvuzela blows* Scrabble Championships!
...well, that was anticlimactic.
