Hey I just started learning to play guitar but I'm trying to teach myself. I thought of getting lessons but (1) it's pretty expensive and (2) I'm not sure if this would be the case, but when I used to have piano lessons my teacher kind of controlled what I played. I'm sure that's not the case with all music teachers, but yeah, I like having the freedom to play whatever songs I want. Though a teacher would be useful for feedback and explaining some things Youtube can't xD

I've been playing the guitar for a while.. I had lessons when I was much younger, but have played the guitar more since I stopped having lessons... so yh.... anyone else fail at playing an F chord. I have only just got my F playing to the stage where I will use it in songs (other than hallelujah, but I do a special picking thing which means you don't have to bar across the top )

I've been playing electric guitar casually for the last 5 years. Currently using a mid-range Ibanez and a line6 POD X3 to get my awesome metal tones.

I've been playing guitar for 4 years since i was 10 years old i have a 3/4 size acoustic with an AMAZING sound and a hagstrom f200p. I use my Dad's 20 year old amp (I know, i know...) and i'm using a Zoom G1 pedal to get some amazing distorted effects. I play at a pretty high standard and its pretty much the main focus of my life

With lessons, i'd look around for a good price and a good standard of teaching Dawsons is great if you live in the UK I go there and my teacher is amazing. Most music schools generally offer a free trial lesson before you start paying so i'd look around a little before you completely give up on being taught by another person.

In terms of guitar, I know some chords, but I don't really play..

Yeah I dont like controlling teachers either, being taught piano has never appealed to me so i am self taught on that, but I check with my friend and she tells me if i've got the fingering wrong. I'm around grade 4 standard piano now. Everyone i know that plays piano says they dont like it because their teacher doesn't let them play what the want. With my guitar lessons its not like that because sometimes there is no definate way to play.

Cool, I think I might look around for some. Though actually, I don't technically own a guitar, I'm borrowing my brother's atm. xD And I can't really afford my own...

I wish I had a good guitar.. I've been playing for about 2 1/2 years.. and I've been using my mom's old guitar (which she got used) and a lower quality epiphone.. My guitar teacher was fairly controlling, so i quit and i've been teaching myself with some books and online help.. and potterrelatedname look on craigslist for a guitar, you can sometimes find really good prices on them... but watch out for counterfeits..

I talked to my parents and ended up only paying for half of it. Thats worth a try, except my guitar was really expensive so I still have no money

F-chord is always hard, coz my index finger was being too weak XD but um, it's getting easier for me

Sorry for bumping this topic, but it needs to get bumped I've been playing guitar for about 2 years. One year with lessons, in a group, so it's cheaper :)In a group it costs only 32€ for a year, so it's very cheap. Right now I have an Yamahas folk guitar, which means that it's a bit bigger, and it has metal strings. My first guitar, btw : ) And i have an electric Epiphone Explorer GT, which is kind a metal guitar. Epiphone is great, though it's bit cheaper, but it's really awesome. And no, I haven't got much problems with F

I've been teaching myself the guitar for about a year now. I have a crap Cort G210 and a Kustom Arrow 16 amp.
I suck at barre chords.

I've been playing guitar for about 10 years now. I'm completely self taught so I've probably picked up some terrible habits that i'm not even aware of although I do bits and pieces of session musician work and do a fair number of jam nights with people a lot older than me and so far I've managed to get away with it. I would suggest starting by teaching yourself and then getting a teacher when you think you've reached your limits but hopefully by them you will still have the drive to carry on playing as opposed to having all the enthusiasm beaten out of you when your just getting started.
I personally found that learning from books didn't really help me as I'd always end up going through them very fast, I'd advise learning to play songs you like as it will give you an idea of how that sort of music is formed and the general rules. Them really try to expand the types of music your play along to as it will really teach you how to listen which I think is the most important part of any instrument. Once you learn to listen then all the music theory will just fall into place and make sense, not saying that you shouldn't go out of your way to read up on music theory but a lot of the time you seem to start off thinking of playing and the theory being separate things.
I'm using a Crafter SA and an 1950s Egmond Lucky 7 - I've got a few very old effects pedals that I've been given and I use a VOX Valvetronix amplifier
