Jesus! Why do we have to talk about religion 50% of the time.

All religion is based on a single question. Why?

Actually religion more typically extends from the question: "how?"
for example, no where in the religion of Christianity does it explain why humans are alive. It does explain, how they came about, how they should live, how they should die, and how the afterlife works, but rarely does it answer "why?"
primitive religions are a better example of this, a spirit for every seemingly in explicable action/object (wind, sun, moon, tides, life, death, good fortune, etc.)
in honesty only very few schools of thought focus on the question "why?" namely because it is hard to answer completely.

But the main question is "Why are we?" and religions answer that with their respective god(s).

Homer had his truck filled with pig poop. And instead of disposing it properly, he dumped it in the lake so he wouldn't miss his free doughnuts. Just like Homer, people tried to come up with explanations for what they were unable to understand. So religion was born.

I do not believe you are correct Alex, if I'm wrong please show me an example of a religion that provides an answer to the question "why are we here?"

Haha, I was getting why confused with how. I stood back and thought "Why is it why?" and realized all religions explain how.

As you can see, there was a minor debate. Also, if you read the second post by the OP, you'll see that it was by fluke and mistake as to why it is here. The OP realized that it should have been in A&E, but put it here first.

Exactly. The Bible, Quran, or any other religous book gives detailed explanations on all those questions, but leaves us basically in the dark as to why. Personally, I believe it's up to each and every one of us to figure out exactly why we were placed on this earth, and then to carry out exactly that. Now I could be wrong, but this is what I believe. Prove me wrong.

I don't like to be like this, but these kind of threads won't get us anywhere. Everybody just ends up angry and no one wants to try anything new. I mean, that is understandable, given that most of us were brought up with X religion or decided to be atheists.

Yea, well at this point there's very little left to debate or discuss that most of us have an opinion on. And if an old topic comes up just let those people talk with whoever wants to talk about it... which is generally just the new people.
