At what age do you think parents should start talking to their kids about sex and about sex education?

I was basically taught from the beginning. My parents never pulled any stork-type bullcrap on me.

At around 10 years, just at the beginning of puberty.
NOTE: Please don't correct me if I am wrong about the puberty age, that isn't what this thread is about.

I know a lot of parents had to do the "birds and the bees" talk with their kids when they were like five or six, but I always knew about it -- for as long as I can remember. My parents explained it like any other fact of life, like how the sky is blue because of refraction, or how water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen arranged into water molecules.

Parents should tell their kids at 10 or 11. If the kids ask before then, tell them you'll tell them when they are older or say the basics.
Sex shouldn't be so taboo. It is natural. Saying "The male puts his penis in the vagina" shouldn't be seen as obscene.

I disagree I feel that it is appropriate to tell the truth about something like that rather than look at it as a part fo life that should be hidden when it is (in my opinion) natural.

It was a joke dude... I came across this article, and I have to say...America is doing it wrong. (But that's not news). But since the article only covers America and Europe, I'm curious to know what type of sexual education is going on in Canada, Mexico, Africa, Asia, and Australia. (and wherever else)

At around 10 years, just at the beginning of puberty. NOTE: Please don't correct me if I am wrong about the puberty age, that isn't what this thread is about. It actually starts at a different age for everyone but statistically I believe 13 is the standard age of puberty as puberty mainly happens during the teen years. There's also separate statistical rates for boys and girls which leads allot of people to believe that girls mature faster than boys. While this may be statistically true it is not factually true as some boys are very likely to mature before girls. There's also some cases where girls don't develop their breasts at all until their first pregnancy. So while boys are sure to go threw puberty during their teen years or at least some time before, girls may not complete the cycle of their puberty for several year after. Anyway, statistically I've heard that girls start puberty around age 10 as you say however as I said at the beginning some people may start earlier or later than the statistic norm would suggest. One of of my former co-workers had complained one day that her daughter was growing up too fast as most parents do only she had also mentioned that her daughter who was only 8 years old at the time was already needing to shave her legs. I myself around the 6th grade started noticing my voice cracking which as a voice actor, was the worst time of my life. My voice capacity isn't nearly as wide as it was before and what's worse is that my voice didn't actually get any deeper as I was told it would but being a voice actor I just trained myself to talk deeper than I normally would. I did it as a child too mainly because I didn't like adults telling me that I sounded like a girl.

Sex should be a natural subject, it's 2010 after all. Of course you have to adapt the way you say it to the age of the kid your talking to, but other than that, they can and should know.

I like how rialvestro quoted a person saying "NOTE: Please don't correct me if I am wrong about the puberty age, that isn't what this thread is about." and then wrote an entire (rather long) post doing just that. lolol.
Personally, I think that a very brief, diluted version should be given to young children (none of the birds and the bees or the stork crap). Something like, "When a man and a woman love each other, they sleep together. That's where babies are made." Then, when they're puberty age they can hear the whole shebang.
I know my mom told me a LOT. She even told me about degrading sexual slang, pornography, masturbation (and how it's perfectly okay and natural to do that), etc etc. She said she'd rather I hear it from her and understand why it's wrong than find out from some giggling idiots at school. I appreciate that and hope to do the same for my kids (*cough*LooksAtRob*cough*)

This is pretty much what I told my little brother and he's 7. Uhhh... what's "the birds and the bees" stuff? I don't think I've ever heard that before. Unless you're talking about the song

Actually I never said he was wrong. I explained he could be wrong depending on a variety of different circumstances but also that he could be right for the same reasons. I thought that was the birds and the bees talk? I don't know I never had that talk, I just had sex ed in high school which was pointless sense I already got the real information from the internet and didn't learn anything I didn't already know. I find the internet is very helpful with that sort of thing though you will get allot of unhelpful porn in the process. I think the internet kinda helps with all the awkwardness of talking. I think that's the only real reason parents don't talk to their kids is because the parent doesn't want to talk any more than the kid wants to listen. Though if they don't have some basic knowledge to begin with they won't know what information to look for on the internet. The information on the internet just makes things a little less awkward.

Kids who look for sex ed information on the internet become porn addicts.
