We all have real life projects and commitments we should be doing but instead we procrastinate. Let's come up with a system, a program, or something, to make these boring things fun. I'm thinking of somehow utilizing this: www.cracked.com/article_18461_5-creepy-ways-video-games-are-trying-to-get-you-addicted.htmlSomehow, we can convert the tactics used by MMORPG's to 'hook' people to real life commitments!! BUT HOW?! Here are a few idea's: - Project Progress bars
- Win exp from completing projects
- Level up from exp
Any other ideas?

Damn it Cam, stop being so awesome... You do have a point though, if we are able to get people addicted to doing the right things, it would be way easier than getting people committed to something they don't find entertaining. I agree with all three ideas. Only things I would add are: - "Coins" being given for every project completed (some worth more than others)
- Coins would be used to buy special awards to customize your profile
- Titles when achieved a number or combination of projects completed/helping (say for example if you joined and are helping with three projects that donate to those in need [like the rice and blood projects] you would get a title of "Humanitarian" or if you help with 3 projects having to do with SPOTM you get the title of "community ally")
- Scoreboards for awards, coins, or points(I know competitions can get nasty but you have to admit, they get people moving)
- We could also hold OMGPOP tournaments [you can spend coins to get a lives (lives would be how many times you can replay) Winner gets an award]
Hope that helps

I seriously like the way you think. I'm thinking we approach someone who can make an application like this... know anyone?

If you guys comb the various ProBoards code databases and find something to use for these ideas, I bet we'd give them a shot. Seems pretty cool.
I'm not much of a coder anymore, but maybe others are (Asher & Cortney?) and can be approached to write it themselves.

HOLY SHIRT! I randomly bought a copy of EDGE game magazine and one of the first article was about a new concept called "Gamification" so I read it, and it talks pretty much about these ideas. So I googled Gamification: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamification

I do it, sort of. Everyday, at the beginning of the day, I list out everything I need to do. Then if I get stuff done ahead of time, I treat myself with a movie/TV marathon. It works.

I seriously like the way you think. I'm thinking we approach someone who can make an application like this... know anyone? Funny you should mention an app...(If I had something that could run it, I would buy it in a heartbeat.) I do it, sort of. Everyday, at the beginning of the day, I list out everything I need to do. Then if I get stuff done ahead of time, I treat myself with a movie/TV marathon. It works. The trick certainly seems to have the willpower to keep those rewards until after you've done the work. It gets tougher when you have immediate access to those rewards beforehand. The way I'm trying to get over my procrastination is to make a couple of lists. The first list is a huge list of things that I want to get done. The second is a list of goals either for the week, or for a single day. I'm just happy to cross stuff off when it gets done. I'm also trying to do a video every other week listing off how I was productive in the past two weeks. (Even though I still need to catch up on my unrecorded VEDO videos, I actually did record/edit a weekly video every Friday saying how I was productive.)

I wish I still had my iPhone.

Wtf. I thought I had a new awesome idea. Turns out everyone's doing it. xD Well in reality this is a very very old idea. Napoleon Bonaparte once said: “A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon.” and really isn't that what we are doing? xP

But I mean to find out it actually has a name, and to find out my idea has actually been carried out by someone who made Little Big planet: EpicWin

All of these sound like great ideas! As someone who is trying to stay off online games (at least for a week) it would be really cool to transition from games with no real purpose to a game-like structure to help people make the world a better place.

I know that this thread is kind of dead, but I just thought I'd temporarily revive it with a little announcement of mine. On my personal YouTube channel ( Maculata, if you're wondering), I'll be starting up a weekly series called Productivity Watch in January. I'm leaning towards an "every Saturday" update schedule for all of 2011. (Hopefully, I can keep to it!) The gist of the series is a sort of vlog where I list off how I was productive that week. I hope to also comment on the various issues of procrastination, in addition to going over the numerous tips of how to beat it. We'll see what happens. The tentative first video will be posted on January 8th, 2011.

Now that I think about it - if something like those ideas were implemented - it could help to revive the moon the way camoon was thinking

ERIN: I saw a video with the name Productivity Watch on your channel, and it caught my attention before this post... I like the idea lot. Mind if I steal the idea for CrowBros? Obviously I will credit you.

As long as you give credit, I don't see why not. =) You may want to call it something else, though?
