So what are your views on the age of consent where you live, and in general? I think 15-16 should be the age of consent. As long as it's consensual, I don't think age plays much of a part in who you have sex with (obviously I understand the problem with having sex with people very young, as it can be physically damaging, and if this is the case, I say it shouldn't happen. But I think 15-16 year olds are old enough to make decisions, but I also think that they should be educated about sex. (But this discussion isn't really about sex education). I am in Florida, and the age of consent here is 16/18 (Does this mean that it is legal for someone who is 16 to legally consent for sex with someone who is 18?) If you are unsure of the age of consent in your location, here is a chart: Age of Consent chart

That's not why it's illegal.....

Uh huh, did I say it was? I just said that I understand the problem with that. But out of curiosity, if that isn't the reason, what is?

16/18 means the age of consent is 16 for boys, and 18 for girls.
Yes, I know, it's stupid. I didn't come up with it.
I think 16 is a reasonable age of consent

Here, in Israel, the age of consent is 14 for guys and 16 for girls. I say that's unfair both of them should be the same. I think that somewhere in the ages of 14-16 is what should be allowed but no one really cares anyways. I'm underage, and sexually active. Almost everyone I know knows it and no one cares. I take the pill (which was prescribed by a doctor so he knows too)... Unless it's goes over the norm of 2x-7 (x-age of the first person, the sum is the maximal age of the second) or without consent, no one gives a damn.

That chart is fascinating.
I don't see a problem with allowing 16 year olds to have sex in the United States. It is amazing how sex is such taboo here.

see, not me. i agree with everyone before zang in saying that as long as sex is consensual, and the two partakers are of age, (it is, however, stupid that girls age of consent is 18 and guys AOC is 16. ) it shouldn't be frowned upon just because it's before marriage.

actually - it's possible that 16/18 means 16 for ye olde regular sex, and 18 to have buttsex

*coughcoughIbelieveinwaitingtillnarriagecoughcough* That's not really relevant, Zang... It actually is. He believes people should not have sex until they are married. It applies to this thread because he feels as though there should be no age, just marriage.

I'm assuming Zang's argument also applies to gay couples who can't, technically, get married?

Hmm. Good point. I don't know how I feel about that then

I'm assuming Zang's argument also applies to gay couples who can't, technically, get married? I wasn't supporting his opinion, just saying it had relevance. I'm not sure what I think of the age of consent. I just know that if a 17 and 18 year old have sex they shouldn't get arrested because of sex with a minor. It is a tiny difference and if the 17 year old was just a few months older, they could have sex without any problem whatsoever.

I don't think Zang's original comment about sex after marriage is relevant. Some countries marry as low as 12 years old (some lower), and a lot of the time it is predetermined and the wife has no say in the matter. Is it really fair to say that marriage should be the deciding factor if a 12 year old is prearranged to marry a 33 year old, who can have sex with her whenever he wants? I think not.
So yes, the point of marriage is relevant, but I don't think it makes much of a difference, and if anything, it only makes matters worse (if it is by law, if it is a persons choice, I see no problem with it.) The opinion of marriage is only relevent if it is in regards to the legality of having sex. (in this thread anyway.)

I found this: www.ageofconsent.com/florida.htmSo according to that last part, if you are 16 or older you are legally allowed to have sexual contact with someone who is under 24 years of age...sounds good to me. (in Florida)
