No, this thread is not about if rap sucks or not.
This thread is about the limitations rap imposes on itself.
Here's the situation: Mainstream rap is about bitches, hoes, money, cars, smoking, crews, bling, and girls (give or take a few things). I'm not being rude, this is just the case.
I believe rap has so much more potential than it gives itself credit for, and I think by repeating the same subjects, the same material, the same lyrics even, over and over, is only diminishing this potential. Practically every other genre (with country and R&B probably being the exceptions) talks about an endless variety of subjects. I don't see why rap and rappers don't talk about other subjects.
There are plenty of non-mainstream rappers who talk about other things that are completely different things than listed above (Aesop Rock, Busdriver, The Grouch, Flobots, etc.) and even parody and comedy rappers (Bo Burnham, Rucka Rucka Ali, Afion Crocket Weird Al even.) Bo Burnham is especially witty and clever, and you just don't find this level of intelligence and wit in mainstream rap (except maybe by Eminem)
So why aren't the more creative, more clever artists, mainstream? Why is the mainstream rap society so pulled down by these specific interests which are so redundant by now?
What do you think?
