What do you guys think of Earth Hour? Silly and/or pointless, or a worthwhile action, or what?

You gave choice a and choice b, but the two are not all encompassing. Earth hour is far from silly and or pointless. Whether or not it's worthwhile is in the eyes of those who take part in it and spread the idea. The people who started the idea, I'm sure they think it was extremely worthwhile and since its origination it has spread and reached millions all around the world.
Also, I don't see how it can possibly be bad - so why not?

The amount of energy put into marketing and promoting the idea of Earth Hour far outweighs the supposedly saved.

ryan: xP Ok, let me very lazily fix that. There are people who believe global warming and even our influence on the environment are not to be taken seriously; there are other people who dismiss Earth Hour because they think the participants of EH think the Earth can be magically saved by turning off the lights one hour a year, and this, of course, sounds silly. Others do because the candles that are used instead of lightbulbs may damage the environment and the damage of the candles would outweight the good done by turning off lights (even if not every lightbulb was replaced by a candle). There are plenty of reasons why people may not like this. Oh, and also what Lex said. I think this is a good thing (that maybe could be done better), not because we would magically save the Earth or because we are giving the Earth a brake, but because it helps to spread a message and it creates awareness that hopefully lasts much more than a little hour each year.

Well - given that EVERY light in town went off - I'm pretty sure the 100k people that live here complied with Earth Hour.
Well - everybody in Peterborough is eco friendly. They're racist, but they're eco friendly.

I wasn't at home. But I'm sure my grandma had the living room and kitchen lights on, and the TV volume maxed out. I think that even if Earth Hour doesn't actually save the planet and all that jazz, it couldn't hurt. Just take a nap or something lol.

I had company... like 10 friends at my house and I shouted ITS EARTH HOUR WE MUST TURN OFF THE LIGHTS FOR AN HOUR TO CELEBRATE!!! BREAK OUT THE CANDLES!
We played cards in the dark. It was fun.
None of my friends had even heard about it... Neither had my family... The street lamps were still on.
Man, I thought the SF bay area was more green than this?

Honestly, I don't think Earth Hour was conceived to save energy. One hour is not going to make much of a difference. I think it was made to raise awareness of just how much we rely on electricity in our day-to-day lives. If you don't use any electronics for even just one hour, it makes you realise just how much you depend on electricity.
One could argue that the amount of money spent on promotional materials for breast cancer charities could be put towards actual breast cancer reaserch. And it's true, it could. However the promotion raises the public awareness of the issue. Without all of their commercials etc. charities wouldn't get nearly as many donations as they do with the publicity.
