We should start a thread each week with Dan's discussion. Not just cause we worship him, but it's fun

Shouldn't this be in Debate Club?
Unless this is just discussion?
Personally, I think it's wrong (the ban,) as these women aren't being forced to wear a burqa.

Meh, we need a good excuse to use this section

I think this section is best for talking about the discussion (like so) and the debate section is best used for, well, debating topics. But I can't move it... hmph.
Anyways, this is what I wrote on youtube: "I do not support a law that aims to liberate people by restricting their freedoms. France must permit citizens freedom of expression and the host of rights that go with it if they want to promote a free society, I mean HAVE THEY FORGOTTEN ABOUT THE GREAT JEAN-PAUL SARTRE ALREADY!!!?!?!"

Does anyone know the actual percentage of people who are forced to wear burqas over people who just want to wear them?

Does anyone know the actual percentage of people who are forced to wear burqas over people who just want to wear them? Is there a way to find out? If they are forced to wear them, they're also probably forced to keep that hidden as well.

So what would you think? Do you think the majority of women who wear them are wearing them for fun?

I should also say I'm on the fence about this law as well. I'm not saying it was 100% ok

I don't think it matters what percent of women are wearing burqas because they're forced to. People should be allowed to choose regardless. If they want to target the people forcing women to wear burqas they're going about it all wrong. You don't teach people to do the right thing by doing the wrong thing, two wrongs don't make a right. France is enforcing restrictions to promote freedom, it's hypocritical.

While I think its a valid point about the face covering, the pretenses under which the issue was brought up was fueled by Islamaphobic intentions. That, in and of itself was wrong.

Islamaphobic feeling are growing stronger in Europe every day. This is just one example of it. I don't want to get into it since its like 2 in the morning but I just want to say Europeans be creazy.

It's a catch-22.
If you keep Burqas legal, you risk some women being forced to wear them against their will.
If you make the Burqa illegal, then you are committing discrimination by politically incorrect means. (Eg. Religion, Culture, etc.)
Either way, someone's gonna get sued.

I think they should be banned in public. At the end of the day it alarms me when I see someone wearing one, not seeing their face freaks me out.
2. You can't understand people if they are wearing one, their voice is always muffled.
I am in support of France banning them, esp in schools.

I have never actually heard of burqas being worn in schools.
I'm neutral on a face-covering ban. But I am TOTALLY against the fact that it was obviously targeted at a specific ethno-religious group.

And I am alarmed when I see black people down the street, I have no way of knowing if they will attack me. Also they speak funny so I have no idea what they are talking about. They should be banned from public. Are you really that ignorant or are you just trolling?

joshuapundit.blogspot.com/2009/11/swiss-vote-ban-minarets.htmlThis is another example of this madness. The Swiss made a ban on building new Minarets. This is such an idocracy. Instead of fighting the radical wing within the muslim community by showing the rest of the muslims that we are the better people, we have let ourselves be manipulated. This is what terrorist groups want! Now they will turn around to the muslims in France, Switzerland or Russia and say that we are the enemy. And the irony will be that they will be right, because our actions sure make it look as such.

If these towers infringe others' rights, then they shouldn't be built anymore. They ring at "earsplitting volumes".
The burqas, though, don't infringe on anyone else, so this ban is pretty dumb.

But that wasn't even what they were arguing against. Plus christian churches make shitload of noise, so one is all right and the other one isn't?

it would be hypocritical on my part to say that i support the ban on burqas and minarets. i, as a religious jew, rely heavily on religious freedom laws and i therefore cannot support laws that negate them.
as for minarets being too loud...dont ban them...make them follow noise ordnance laws.
as for teh pretense that burqas were banned because they were a symbol of women's abuse...MEN ARENT THE ONLY ADHERENTS OF SHARIA!!! just because some women are forced does NOT mean that they are all forced. thats like saying that the husbands of wives with bruises should be arrested or fined just because he may have done it...whether there is proof to support that claim or not! absolutely ridiculous. you cannot ban something because you THINK there MAY be abuse associated with it ESPECIALLY if you have no hard evidence to back that up.

Loud bells should be banned. Like Ausher said, follow noise laws.
