Some think war is a good thing, some think it's bad, some are somewhere in between. Where are you, and why? (I'll post my opinion later)

War is sometimes necessary. I use the same concepts as Socrates to validate my theory. Socrates took larges masses of people and related them to individuals, or vice-versa, to prove his point. So just as sometimes in life, fighting is necessary, such as to defend yourself from being injured or killed when someone attacks you or to defend your lil' brother or sister from a bully twice their size... It is also necessary to sometimes engage in war if you believe strongly that if you don't your country will be blown up or if one of your country's peaceful allies is being raped and pillaged, you should come to their rescue. However, I disagree with beating someone up because you simply "don't like them, I also disagree with going to war with a country because you have different beliefs.

Depends a bit on perspective. I think it would be right to say that going to war is necessary when someone else starts it. However, I think it would also be correct to say that war is unnecessary -- and that it's the aggressor starting it. The aggressor is the one starting the war, and you are thereafter merely defending yourself.
So, war is not necessary, but if you end up with one on your hands thanks to someone else, fighting it is necessary.

There is a difference between war and dispute. All animals on planet earth experience some form of dispute at some point, most find a way to work around it without conflict, some end up entering conflict. Only two species on earth have warfare (ants and humans are the only species who enter societies large enough to have warfare), so surely it is never necessary, but simply a product how our society acts. Why must war be an answer if we are attacked? Surely defense is necessary, but not war.

What about if the actions of another society will most likely lead to war? Like Hitler, WWII etc. They weren't attacking the US directly (Japan were, but I'm talking about Germany) but troops were sent in anyway, which helped the Allies win the war. They didn't HAVE to go to war, since technically at the time they weren't directly involved, but they did, and it's a good thing they did.
If you find out another country is planning on invading yours, It's probably a good idea to beat them to it. I mean you could set up a defense but it'd be much more effective to just destroy their forces. Either way, too many people are gonna die but if you're on what you feel is the "right" side, is 'starting the war' excusable if your society is or is soon to be under threat?
I'd say war is necessary in those cases, when there's a viable threat, even if the opposing side hasn't cast the first stone.

US did not go to war until they were attacked by allies of germany (japan) the only reason the US went to war is because they would not sit by and let other countries attack us. I'm pretty sure (though my history is a bit rusty) that the Allies convinced us to help on the European front, as we only wanted to defend our nation to japan's attack.

To my knowledge the U.S> entered the European front willing, and did so almost immediately after pearl harbor but I also think it was necessary I liken WW2(From the american viewpoint) like this, if you were on a school yard and in this school yard there are bullies that are twins, 1 of the the bullies shoves you from behind and runs but his twin brother, whom you know will come to his aid, is still standing just a few feet away, it would make since for you, if you want to win the confrontation to hit the innocent twin, even if you know he didn't shove you, because then he won't have as much strength when you have to fight them both together.
I just came up with that so, if it may not quite make sence, or even be applicable lol
But in a general view I think war is an inevitable result of living in a world where world issues have no sort of judiciary system for Global issues, so to solve non-violent conflict we...have violent conflict.
If none of that makes since, it's because I just woke up and I really need to wait a bit before I start thinking lol

Exactly! Your analogy wins. Pretty much what I was trying to say, but put more eloquenly =) Hopefully eventually we'll have a global justice system, like the EU or the US. I doubt it'll happen in our lifetime though.

Dimstow (sense) That is a beautiful analogy: and makes more sense. Surely though war is not necessary, and the only reason it persists is because of aggressors. If aggressors did not start full scale war, and instead had only minor conflicts, then the solution to said conflicts could be solved some other way.

Well the only problem with war in my opinion is the fact that pepeole who dosnt want anything to do with it dies. Anyone that choses to go to war with the risk of death have chosen it.
