For those of you that don't know, president Obama is lifting a ban on drilling oil near the shores of the US. They plan to start dilling for oil about 50 miles off of the coast of virginia (or so i read.) I really don't know what to think of this, so i thought I would post a debate - read it when i have the chance, and then decide for myself. Sound good?

Oh great. My state is contributing to global warming, pretty much.

This is a huge step in the wrong direction. Instead of further depleting our already strained oil resources, we should investing in new alternative energy technologies like fusion power.

I thought Bush lifted this ban right before he got out of office.
I don't know, I'm just a confused child.

finally. obama is coming to his senses. Oh God, you scare me. I might actually agree with him. It's my belief that global warming is a scam and tree huggers should die! (Not really, lol, although their viewpoints don't quite make sense to me.) If something is going to benefit us than isn't it worth it to look into it? Also what exactly is the point of converting to an alternate fuel source right now? Theres still plenty of oil and if we convert now there will just be a bunch of it in the earth. What would you suggest we use it for after we convert to an alternate fuel source? However you do make a great point that we have to convert but in my opinion it should be an eventual decision not an immediate. Especially because it would make no sense. Why eat your dessert when you haven't even finished your dinner?

Global warming is the least of my concerns. Plus, I think it's a load of bologna.
I don't mind Obama drilling as long as we are searching for other sources of energy in the meantime.

CortneyWhatever Obama does has no effect on what scientists are researching. It's really up to them. Obama is just trying to keep us going for now. i.e. life support.

Don't you think it's better to try to look for a solution that will let us depend less on oil that will eventually run out one day?

I am disappointed. Regardless of global warming, offshore drilling effects animal habitats and pollutes. I like ecology and I dont like pollution.

However you do make a great point that we have to convert but in my opinion it should be an eventual decision not an immediate. Especially because it would make no sense. Why eat your dessert when you haven't even finished your dinner? This is the main problem in today's society. You can't just pretend like the problem isn't there and let it grow. You suggest we find a new energy source once we deplete our oil. In the meantime, we contribute, albeit a relatively small amount, to global warming due to gasses and larger water levels in the atmosphere. Then we run out of oil so we start looking for a way to find alternative fuel. Oh look, we cannot communicate because electricity in the majority of the world goes down due to lack of energy. The economy is a mess now that specific countries that only had oil to rely on are down. Everyone is in a state of distress. This is not how solutions are formed. Now, that being said, I am okay with this policy. Why? Because Obama, unlike others, is investing in alternative fuel. Finding more oil here means spending less money to get it internationally and being able to fuel ourselves and in the meantime pay for research on alternative fuel sources. If he was NOT funding alternative source research then this action would be ridiculous.

The real question should be, should they really have been constricting it in the first place?
I for one believe that from the data I have seen, global warming is a reality, whether or not it is manmade is a different story. And most likely, global warming has reached the point to where we really can't stop it, global warming is going to happen. Now I for one want to make it through global warming, and how do we do that? Well if the tragedy in Haiti and the earthquake in Chile have taught us anything, the richer you are, the better chance you have of surviving something of this nature. Richer people can afford the necessary goods to help them live through a disaster like global warming.
So how do we get richer? Well, by not restricting our must abundant and our cheapest fuel source, and by not diverting valuable resources into very expensive energy technologies that may never come to fruition. If the market and taxpayers wanted to support green tech, we would never have to subsidize it.

You guys still need oil, so you have a choice, buy it from Russia etc. or use your own. Oil will get burned anyway
This makes a heck of a lot of more sense than invading a country with oil. If everyone is careful there won't be an oil spill and no badness will occur.
In the future you won't need to do either, the money from this could help get that future closer by funding research.
But I get why yee're annoyed, I'd be annoyed if it was us too.
I think you're underestimating the scale of the problem.
