I love the debate club so don't think I'm saying do away with it or anything like that. but I've found a rather bad trend.
I think the word "debate" has brought out the worst instincts in some of the pogotribe. yes debate is fun and don't do away with debate entirely, but I think we should have more of an emphasis on discussion rather then debate(much like Dan's open letter to educators) becuase debate makes people fight for validation, mainly the validation that they are right...
and of course what follows from being right is sometimes proving everyone else who disagrees with you is wrong. that's not what this tribe is about.

Actually, from what I hear, the debates in Debate Club are quite civil.
As far as I know, "debate" has no negative connotation. It's almost always used to replace "argue."
Honestly... a word is not going to change how someone posts. There's no need to make a big deal about this, in my opinion.

perhaps I made mountains out of molehills. I just thought I'd share. if anything ever got truly out of hand I'd tell you. but as is your right. it's not by any means bad. there are just times I think people could make more effort to relate to each other and acknowledge the inherit goodness in the exchange of ideas ^_^

well, I have seen someone who didn't post something in the Debate Club because he said "I don't want it to be a debate, but a discussion". Wouldn't be much of a hassle to change it anyway..

In my opinon, the name doesn't matter. If people want to be civil they will be and if they don't then they won't. I don't think the people of the pogotribe are going to adopt certain traits or behaviours simpley based on a word. Kadie x

After a moment of contemplation, I agree with you.
Debate entails lots of people trying to validate their views. Discussion entails lots of people trying to come to a consensus. Aiming for the same goal.

But we're not trying to come up with a consensus, we ARE trying to validate our views. For example, in Dan's videos about religion, he wasn't trying to convert anybody: he was just DEBATING his views and other views.
We don't want to make everybody believe the same thing, or compromise our beliefs. We want to debate and validate while we stand by what we know to be true.

At first I was going to say that the name is insignificant, even if it isn't totally accurate, but I think Cortney's point is right... We're not trying to agree or compromise; we're all just defending our own opinions. Sometimes we change each other's minds, usually we don't. Plus "Debate Club" is already in the "Discussion" section... Calling it "Discussion" or something of that nature would just be confusing.

Debates here are quite normal and civil. There's no 'I'm right, you're wrong, ahaha' that I've seen. No need to worry. (:
