No, I believe if you call someone a Jew you are inferring that they are Jewish. It's only derogatory if that is what the speaker intends it to be...

as with any term, it depends on how its used.
"jew, em down" - derogatory "You're a jew" - not

It's pretty much all in the context and tone. If you're friends with a Jewish person, and you say "Yo Jew!" and they don't find it offensive, than it's fine. ^_^ But if you don't know them as well, and you don't know if they take offense by it, than one should avoid it.

at my old school we used to use as a synonym for stinge / stooge etc. as in to a teacher.. " you jewed me a mark on this test. the jews at school never took offence to it, so i guess it was ok. but i wouldn't use it a orthodox jewish suburb.

No it's not. However no one is just a Jew or just a Christian, People are loads of things, no one is defined by their religion. We should use adjectives to describe people. An adjective describes but a noun names. There is a huge difference
For that reason I think it's always nicer to use an adjective over a noun.
A black A black person
A gay A gay person
A Jew A Jewish person
A Japanese / A Jap A Japanese person
A christian A christian person
A Muslim A Muslim person
A Chinese / A Chinaman A Chinese person
A Roma A Roma person
A German A German person
An American An american person
(capitalization used when spell checker insisted i use it, I wonder how that is decided?)
We need to remember that we are first and foremost people, and all other labels are just adjectives that describe one part of us, they are not nouns to define all of what we are.
The words we use affect the way we think and the way we think affects the words we use. You can actually change your whole outlook on life by changing looking at the words you use and trying to affect a change.
