Today I was watching a video by Hank Green of the vlogbrothers and an idea came to mind
Here is the video:
For most everyone who has been watching videos in youtube as long as I have, a feeling of sadness comes when talking about what youtube has become.
Then as Hank was saying that youtube is what we do, something came to mind.
We don't have to change youtube, all the things we might want to add to it we can achieve by ourselves.
As some of you might have already guessed, I'm talking about the spotlight.
Some youtubers have already tried somewhat similar projects, such as buck's picks, or all the shoutouts that are made for comments, or tshirts, but nothing as ambitious or unselfish as what I'm proposing.
I'm talking about getting in touch with the nerdfighters, join forces and create a council or committee that would decide on videos that would make it to a youtube spotlight from unknown, new, or obscure youtubers.
I'm still not sure how all this would be created. Specially the delivery system, but I suppose a youtube channel can be made.
I think this is specially a good idea, since the videos wouldn't be a decision made by one person, but would be left to a vote from all the representatives in the council.
There was a reason we decided youtube was a great place to watch people just like us, with talents, or with the need to express themselves for who they are. Maybe, if we work together, we can begin to get that back.
DFTBA ;D

Ricky, you always have such awesome ideas.. I'm jealous.. But anyway, I think this is a great idea.. I'm always looking for new less-popular youtubers, and I would think that everyone else is, too. So.. yeah.. this is awesome

This Idea=Awesomeness.
And if needed I would volunteer to be on the committe, because I spend most of my time on youtube looking for less-popular people with great videos.

Not sure how to start though.
Like how to contact nerdfighters, how many people would this commitee be made off, how do we get the info about new videos from all of the pogotribe members and nf community, and we need to see if enough people are onboard...
At this moment its a bit too much work for me alone, I think

Well, we could ask Dan to contact Hank or something like that, and rest of decisons made by both groups together.

By the time I got broadband youtube was already the changed thing all you guys were complaining about. So I dunno what exactly ye're trying to bring back?
How does the spotlight system work and how can we affect it?

How does the spotlight system work and how can we affect it? I think he means that years ago, Youtube features actually meant something. Small, unknown youtubers would get features and get a couple thousand to a few hundred thousand views on a video, plus a few hundred or a few thousand new subscribers. And back then, that was a HUGE deal. But now the featured section just promotes the videos of the top youtubers. So it's not about how the site is structured, but about how youtube runs the featured section. ... I think...

Well, RayWilliam's Channel revolves around new/viral videos, he probably has something that could add to this project.

I never really thought of it that way... I almost never look on the featured videos section anyway, but you're surely right. If the featured videos / video spotlight could be used for less known youtubers in the way you describe, that would certainly be awesome. I will follow the development of this with great anticipation =)

Ok, so where do we start should we create a thread about unknown youtubers that are just starting out but have talent?

There used to be a thread like that.. I can't remember if it was on the old moon or not.. I believe it was... Anyway, yeah, a thread seems like a good idea, that way anyone can post their ideas... Oh wait... I remember that in that thread it ended up as a "shameless self-promotion" thread -____- Maybe you could let people put suggestions in the replies, but update the first post with the people that are actually talented and deserve recognition.

Not quite like that Chelsea. The channels can't be provided by the people who run them themselves.

Ricky, what I meant was, the subject of the thread was "your favorite not-well-known YouTubers" or something, and you were supposed to post your favorite YTers who have less than 10,000 subs, but only like 2 people did than, then everyone else was like "Well, there's my channel..." even though that wasn't the point of the thread.

sorry, lol xD
Alright i'll look into it. If I can't find the thread I'll just create a new one. This time with the disclaimer that people shouldn't post their own accounts.

So, it's gonna be like Project for Awesome, only that not run only by nerdfighters, less massive, more constant, and instead of charity we would promote obscure, underrated and awesome youtubers?
Also I suppose that helmet meant that RWJ could give shououts to obscure talented youtubers or something like that. Being that Ray is quite famous on youtube that would be a huge deal for the obscure youtuber being promoted...except maybe for the fact that some of Ray's audience seem to be very troll-like.
