Hey everybody. Lately I've been thinking alot about Godwin's Law and how it seems to be cropping up more online and on television (the invocation, not the discussion about it). For those of you who don't know, Godwin's Law is a term coined by Mike Godwin of Usenet in 1990. Basically it says "As a Usenet argument grows longer, the probability of a Hitler/Nazi reference being made approaches 1". The Law has now been expanded to include almost all arguments in online forums.
Here's what I want to do:
I want to make a two part video (possibly two separate videos) about Godwin's Law. The first part or video will be a more "fun" video. It will be a short "scolding" of anybody who has invoked Godwin's Law. Basically I'm hoping that the video will be passed around different forums where people can post a link to the video in order to save time from posting a lengthy response to anyone who has invoked the Law. The second part or video will be an explanation of Godwin's Law and why people should not make hasty references or allusions to Hitler or the Nazis. The video will go on to explain why Godwin's Law makes for a fallacious or weak argument.
My only worry is sort of self-imposed. I searched on YouTube for "Godwin's Law" and most of the videos that are related to it are rather harsh and extremist, oddly enough. I don't want to make a video that is too controversial to be enjoyed. I just want to teach about the Law and the lessons we can learn from it.
Please let me know what you think.
