Dear SPOTM,
I regret to inform you that our tribal leader has officially stepped down from his position. As such there is much to be discussed and we wish to open the floor to those that would take the time and energy to actively participate in selecting how exactly we move forward from this point. There is no contingency plan in our current structure so this is why it is important that we fix this as soon as possible. Without a leader, we are not really a tribe, instead a group of people that are clustered around with no real purpose. To truly succeed as a tribe, we must have a leader to give is direction as a tribe. To quote John Green "In a contemporary world where the center does not hold you must instead imagine a community where there is no center”. This is true, however in much the same way that Nerdfighteria is not suppose to "center" around John and Hank and in many ways it doesn't, when these two call the tribe of Nerdfighteria to action, action as a whole is taken. The question then becomes thus: "How do we move forward in search of a leader that will hold true to our values and take us further in the future".
That being said, I believe we must first establish where we currently stand as a community. There are three groups as I see it, two extremes and one middle group. Let’s start on the first extreme (Group A). There is a group on SPOTM, comprised of approximately twenty to thirty people who have stepped forward, and stated to the forum that their main focus and purpose on the forum is to change the world. This group sees world changing as our primary focus and goal. Community building, to this group, will be incidental; it will occur alongside the world changing projects. As we come together as a tribe to change the world, the community will naturally bond. No need to focus on community building as it will happen anyway. That is not to say that this group neglects its obligations to community building, simply that it is not their primary focus.
On to extreme number two(Group B). This group believes that we cannot, and will not change the world unless we are a larger, more cohesive community. They believe we should focus on community building as our primary goal. While the "Noble Cause" is still an ambition, it is not achievable until the community is stronger. World changing projects are acceptable to this group, but once again are not the main focus. This group looks towards shorter term goals which could build the community until it is strong enough to do something bigger. Any world changing that occurs during this period of community building would be appreciated, but incidental.
Last but not least, we have the middle group (Group C). This group wants the community to grow to effect the change they know is needed. This group is a sort of compromise between the two extremes. Likewise they also want to make a team effort to change anything, from the small community projects to the larger world changing endeavours. This group is interested in keeping both community building, and world changing as its primary focus. This group is happy with whatever is being done for either cause. They see both as being of equal importance. Therefore, where the first group is disappointed by projects centered entirely on community building, and the second group is annoyed at the first’s insistence on changing the world above all else, this group is happy with both. This group embraces the best qualities of both extremes, and creates a happy medium.
Each one of these groups is just as important as the next. They are all equally essential to the tribe, and to the success of the tribe. They should not war among each other; rather they should embrace their differences, understand they have a symbiotic relationship, and work together toward a common goal. Group A is necessary to keep people focused on changing the world. Group B Is necessary to remind group A of its obligations to the community and community building. Group C is necessary to support the efforts of Groups A and B. If all three groups work together, each focusing on its purpose while working toward a common goal, we can do great things here on SPOTM.
Independently, these groups can accomplish many good things. However to accomplish the truly great, they must be united under a common ideal, a common goal, a common force. Here there must be a voice to take these teams of people and transform them into a tribe. To do the great, we need a tribal leader. We need a leader who can unify us, we need a leader who we can place our trust in, to represent our values, and our goals, a leader who can tell us exactly which path to take in order to accomplish our goals. We had that leader in Dan. If Dan told us to do something, we would debate it, perfect the idea, and do it as a tribe. We had a leader with the authority to direct the tribe as a whole, a leader who could step in and resolve conflict, a leader who could bring us back on course when we stray. Unfortunately we no longer have Dan as our “leader”; however the need is still present. We must have such a leader or leaders, without them progress in our goals will be extremely difficult to accomplish.
Let me explain what I mean by authority. Authority in this case does not mean that the leader has the power to ban and therefore keeps people in line. Authority means that the leader is given their position by the members of the community to guide them. Their authority stems from the community, which will listen to the leader, because the leader is, in essence, an extension of the community itself. This leader, or leaders, will be the community's unifying force to aid in its quest to fulfill its goals. They will be the person to look to when we have doubts about direction and will be the person(s) that point us toward our goal. They will be the person(s) to look to when we have doubts about what to do next.
That being said, we must now establish the different leadership structures possible in this community. As I see it there are three possible structures. The first being a single person chosen by the community to replace Dan. This person would pick up where Dan left off, and the Admins would keep their current position. The second being a situation where we continue as we are now, with the Admins as our leaders. They would assume the authority described above as a group with no single leader above them. They would lead as a group. The third being a council system, where the community would elect a council of people with a leader over them. The leader would be chosen by the community. In this situation, the Admins would continue doing what they currently are doing, with no change in leadership status or authority.
We apologize for the abrupt end to this, but all the authors were dead tired at the end of this, yet we felt that we needed to get this thread up asap. Time is of the essence and we MUST move forward and WE must be the ones to do it.

With the confusion and turmoil recently in the forum it’s easy to get discouraged. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with what has passed and with the ideas we have just purpose above, however this was not written to overwhelm but to develop and craft a better way to work on the forum. Whatever our personal convictions and opinions are, the hope is that we can do more than deal with each other’s differences, but rather use our vision and interests to help everyone. Whatever group you may find yourself siding with, or what form of leadership you think best, our ability to use the resources of a varied community is what will make us succeed. We must decide individually who we want to become as well as what we will contribute in the months of change ahead. This is only the discussion opener, the very beginning in a new phase of the tribe as we know it. In this moment the power is in everyone’s hands, now more than ever. We must decide to work together, not always to agree, but to strive for something beyond our comfort levels within the tribe. We must prove that we are above petty quarrels and pointing fingers for the goals set individually and the tribe as a whole.
Bellow are ideas on how new systems of command could be run. Actually it’s 3 ideas of how leadership could work. It’s a lot of reading don’t get me wrong but it’s something anyone planning on taking part of the tribal restoration we are entering should think about reading. So grab a cup of coffee, and put on your reading glasses, the first step to change is awareness right?

THE SYSTEMS
I propose that the community take 14 days from the posting of this thread to discuss this, and decide on a system. After 14 days, a poll will be opened and the community will vote on which system they want. The poll will remain open for 14 days, after which, the winning system will be implemented. Winning will be decided by which system gets the most votes. Feel free to propose changes to the systems in the next 14 days, and they will be taken into consideration. After 14 days from the posting of this thread, changes to these systems will be locked until the poll is over. Once a system is decided upon by the poll, the aforementioned amendment system will go into effect. Please discuss.
System 1: replacement for Dan.
A leader will be chosen by the tribe to replace Dan. This leader will fill Dan’s position completely. The Admins will function under this new leader in their current capacity. Leading by example, and keeping the community in line as officers. Appointment of admins will continue as they are now. Applications will be sent to admins, and the admin team along with its new elected leader will decide on admin appointments.
Method of appointment: The leader will be chosen by the following method. A thread will be made on the forum where people will be nominated for the position by the tribe. A list will be compiled of the nominees. That list will be whittled down to 5 by the members of the forum. It is in the forum’s best interests to do so, because they want a leader. Those 5 nominees will be voted on by a forum poll. A minimum of 80 votes is required to elect a leader. The nominee with the most posts will become the leader. Voting will be open for 14 days from the beginning of the poll.
Method for removal: the leader will be impeachable by the community. 20 people will have to start a thread as a group, putting their names on the first post when it is first posted. Names may not be added later on. The thread must start with 20 names on the first post in order to be a valid impeachment attempt. These 20 people will post their charges as to why they believe the leader should be removed in their first post. The poll will follow the following format: “impeach leader (leader’s name) yes: no:”. The poll will stay open for 14 days, and requires a minimum of 80 votes for an impeachment. Posters of the impeachment thread may vote as well. Once a removal is rejected by the community, the community must wait a minimum of a week before attempting to remove the leader from his/her position again.
System 2: Admins lead.
There will be no single leader for SPOTM; the Admins will lead the forums and the community. They will decide on the direction of the tribe, and they will come up with ideas for the tribe, and directions for the tribe to take. They will continue as Admins as well. They will moderate in the forums as they currently do while leading the community. The current Admins will stay Admins, and will be subject to removal by the tribe. New Admins will be appointed by the tribe.
Method of appointment: Admins will be chosen by the following method. 3 people will have to start a thread as a group, putting their names on the first post when it is first posted. Names may not be added later on. The thread must start with 3 names on the first post in order to be a valid nomination. They will nominate 3 people to be Admins. They may nominate themselves. A poll will be used to choose the new admin. The poll will remain open for 14 days, and a minimum of 40 people must vote in order to nominate an admin. After 14 days, the nominee with the most votes will be made an admin. The Admins already in power will give the new admin elect full admin powers, and the new admin will assume his/her position as new admin with all the responsibilities and authority inherent in that position. Posters of the nomination thread may vote as well. Admins may create nomination threads following the above guidelines.
Method of removal: To remove an admin from his/her position, 9 people must start a thread as a group putting their names on the first post when it is posted. Names may not be added later on. The thread must start with 9 names on the first post in order to be a valid removal attempt. These 9 people will post their charges against a single admin and their reasons for seeking his/her removal. A poll will be posted by these 9 people with the following format: “Remove admin (admin’s name) Yes: No:”. The poll will remain open for 14 days, and will require a minimum of 50 votes. After 14 days based on the result of the poll the admin will be either removed or keep his/her position. Posters of the removal thread may vote as well. There must always be a minimum of 3 Admins. Admins may create removal threads following the above guidelines. Once a removal is rejected by the community, the community must wait a minimum of a week before attempting to remove the same admin from his/her position again.
System 3: council with central leader.
A council of 9 leaders will be elected by the tribe. The council members will be chosen the same way Admins are chosen in system 2. Each nomination must have its own thread, and conform to the same guidelines that apply to the appointment and removal of Admins as per system 2. A leader will be appointed and removed by the tribe the same way a leader is appointed and removed in system 1. The council will decide on direction for the tribe. They will decide on the paths that the community should take. The leader will be presented with the council’s ideas and decide, based on the information he or she is presented with by the council, which ideas to implement. The council members will not be given any moderation powers. The council leader will be given moderator powers. The Admins will remain as they are in their current position as leaders by example, and as officers, keeping the community in line. Appointment of Admins will remain as they are now, in the hands of the current admin team. The admin team will continue to moderate the forum as they do now. Admins may be appointed to and removed from the council through the aforementioned methods of appointment and removal. Council members may nominate members, and may call for the removal of other council members.
Provision for removal of leader by council: If the council feels that they cannot work with the current leader, or that the leader is not properly taking their ideas and suggestions into account, or that the leader is not conforming to the values of SPOTM, they may unanimously create a removal thread to remove the leader. The 9 council members must unanimously start a thread as a group putting their names on the first post when it is posted. Names may not be added later on. The thread must start with the names of all 9 council members on the first post in order to be a valid removal attempt. The 9 council members will post their charges against a single admin and their reasons for seeking his/her removal. A poll will be posted by these 9 people with the following format: “Remove of leader (leader’s name) Yes: No:”. The poll will remain open for 14 days, and will require a minimum of 80 votes. After 14 days based on the result of the poll the leader will be either removed or keep his/her position. Posters of the removal thread may vote as well. Once a removal is rejected by the community, the council members must wait a minimum of 3 days before attempting to remove the leader from his/her position again.
Provision for amendment of these guidelines: once a system is decided upon by the community, that system will be implemented. Amendments to the system will eventually have to be added. The system for amendment is as follows. 9 people must start a thread as a group putting their names on the first post when it is posted. Names may not be added later on. The thread must start with 9 names on the first post in order to be a valid amendment proposal. These 9 people will post their ideas for amendment. There will be a 2 day waiting period between the posting of an amendment proposal and the opening of the poll in order to allow for discussion of the proposed amendment. A poll will be posted by these 9 people after those 2 days with the following format: “Approve Amendment (amendment name) Yes: No:”. The poll will remain open for 14 days, and will require a minimum of 60 votes. After 14 days based on the result of the poll the amendment will either be implemented or shelved. Posters of the amendment proposal thread may vote as well.
EDIT: System 4: we keep the current leadership system. the admins lead us, in addition to naturally emerging leaders. we allow the tribe to work as a whole in it's own leadership. we will all have to change for the better, and work on ourselves as individuals and as a community.
EDIT:its not limited to these 3 systems! i'll repeat, IT IS NOT LIMITED TO THESE 3 SYSTEMS!!! if anyone wants to come up with a new idea, and present all it's guidelines like has been done with these 3 systems, that system will be added to this thread in the first post, and to the poll in 2 weeks. SO START THINKING!!!
EDIT: there will be a "CHANGE NOTHING" option in the poll as well. this thread is a work in progress, it was made in 8 hours last night by 4 people, obviously there is plenty to iron out.
