Not enough people go there. IRC is pretty awesome, and we've got a mibbit chat right here. It's a great way to connect with everyone in the community in a more direct way, so... Why isn't everyone in the chat?

I'm not a fan of IRC. Though I'm on Skype all the time. Yep, purely opinions-based. No sound logic.

The Skype chat existed before the IRC chat, so by the time it was made, I was already used to talking to everyone on Skype. I didn't see the point in going on that chat when I already have a way to chat with everyone :\

I went there once, it sucked. uh, the only thing that makes chatrooms suck is the people. this leads me to the conclusion: you suck at conversing online

People are so impatient these days. They seek immediate response to their presence. It so happens that we sometimes have great topics in chat, but much of the time we are simply signed in, multitasking on something else. If anyone wants to chat, they need to initiate it.
We don't simply hang out to start engaging in smalltalk with every spotm that comes along.

skype pwns. end of story. </thread> What happened to "SKYPE SUCKS! USE TEAMSPEAK! AAAAH!" eh? But yeah, the IRC chat is inactive. It only sucks because nobody's there. It's open in a tab while people multi-task, like Phat said. You've gotta be patient. Maybe one day it'll have a ton of active members chatting away, but the only way to get there is to actually use it.

the reason we went to teamspeak then..was we were approaching the limit of skyp's voice chat capabilities.

There are several advantages by using IRC instead of/in addition to Skype: - People don't have to sign up for anything to use it (although it is possible, to reserve nicknames).
- There's no size limitations; there can be thousands of people there at once (if we could only get that many there).
- It does not require any software downloads. (This may be a problem with Skype; for instance have I been having a lot of issues with Skype on my computer, and thus do not use it anymore)
- It isn't always as inactive as people thinks. Well, sure, it has its empty periods when nobody's talking, but the Skype chat has this too, and sometimes there's active discussions in the IRC chat.
- IRC was made for text chatting; Skype was not.
